A new study shows that people who had an initial prescription of Benadryl (generically known as diphenhydramine) had twice the risk of getting hurt than those who took the prescription antihistamine Claritin.
Benadryl also is available without a prescription, and most people who take it do so without a doctor's recommendation, the researchers say.
First, the researchers couldn't determine how much Benadryl patients took -- either prescription or over-the-counter, writes John Weiler, MD, of the University of Iowa and the Iowa Clinical Research Corp. He says the study doesn't show a clear cause-and-effect relationship between Benadryl and injury.

To be blunt, as much as I depend on more natural methods and spur mainstream meds, I would trust benadryl over any herb when my dd is having a food reaction.
