Groundspeak - Benchmark Hunting Home Page
A benchmark is a point whose position is known to a high degree of accuracy and is normally marked in some way.
The position of a benchmark with "scaled" coordinates was derived by a human in an office by estimating the location of the mark on a topographic map with a scale (ruler).
Since the Groundspeak benchmark database was obtained from the NGS in the year 2000, newer benchmarks and recent reports on older marks will not be visible here in Groundspeak's copy.

Java pulling ahead? Java versus C++ benchmarks
This article surveys a number of benchmarks and finds that Java performance on numerical code is comparable to that of C++, with hints that Java's relative performance is continuing to improve.
Several years ago these benchmarks showed java performance at the time to be somewhere in the middle of C compiler performance - faster than the worst C compilers, slower than the best.
These benchmarks were updated with a more recent java(1.4) and gcc(3.2), using full optimization (gcc -O3 -mcpu=pentiumpro -fexpensive-optimizations -fschedule-insns2...).

This article discusses a small-scale benchmark test run on nine modern computer languages or variants: Java 1.3.1, Java 1.4.2, C compiled with gcc 3.3.1, Python 2.3.2, Python compiled with Psyco 1.1.1, and the four languages supported by Microsoft's Visual Studio.NET 2003 development environment: Visual Basic, Visual C#, Visual C++, and Visual J#.
The benchmark tests arithmetic and trigonometric functions using a variety of data types, and also tests simple file I/O. All tests took place on a Pentium 4-based computer running Windows XP.
I then re-ran the Python benchmark with the Psyco just-in-time compiler to see if we could combine Python's spectacular readability and rapid development with the speed of a compiled language.

State sets four-year graduation benchmark - The Boston Globe
All Massachusetts public high schools must graduate at least 55 percent of their students in four years, according to a benchmark approved yesterday by the state Board of Education despite the concern of some members that it was too low.
The board unanimously set the standard well below the state average of nearly 80 percent to give struggling schools in cities such as Boston, Lawrence, and Chelsea time to improve.
Board chairman Christopher R. Anderson said his initial reaction also was that the benchmark was pretty low.
