Bendis wants his stories to look like this (with his own art, I thought the drift toward such a look was more out of necessity, dictated by what he did or didn't have photographs and photocopies of).
Bendis left the title just as McFarlane was attempting to inject Mike Moran/Miracleman into the Spawn universe (see TCJ #241), reportedly because a portion of the book was written, rewritten or added to by a co-author without Bendis' knowledge.
Bendis uses such matters principally as utilitarian or scandalous ingredients in routinely linear narratives.

  Encyclopedia: Bendis
Bendis was a Thracian goddess of the hunt whom the Greeks identified with Artemis, and hence with the other two aspects of the former Minoan Triple Goddess, Hecate and Persephone.
She was a huntress, like Artemis, but was accompanied by dancing satyrs and maenads on a 5th Century red-figure stemless cup (at Verona).
The Athenians may have been blending the cult of Bendis with the equally Dionysiac Thracian revels of Kotys, mentioned by Aeschylus.

It was an abortive notion, but one which Bendis claims set him on the path towards learning the basic tools of graphic narrative, especially pacing and building a story.
Bendis clearly saw this as a great opportunity to play with visual storytelling methods, and it highlights his enthusiasm for finding new ways of breaking basic page structure without sacrificing readability.
Yet in both words and visuals, Bendis refuses to be a slave to the source material, because the real world is not the one he wants to write about.
