A government bendy bus that is less than a month old was withdrawn from service this week after it ran off the road and crashed twice in the same day because of a faulty handbrake.
The Volvo articulated bus, one of the newest in the State Transit fleet, hit a pole on Monday morning and later ran into two stationary cars, with different bus drivers behind the wheel in each incident.
A spokesman for State Transit, Tony Melhem, said the bendy bus was taken off the road immediately after the second crash and it was found that the handbrake was not working because it had not been installed correctly.

Bendy buses are the greatest thing in free public transport since the heady days before London Underground introduced ticket barriers.
In practice, especially when the bus is crowded, Oyster-free (and ticket-free) passengers enter by the rearmost door and are almost never challenged by the driver or a ticket inspector.
The almost infinite length of the bus also permits what might be called ‘lively’ behaviour to take place at the far end, without fear of reprimand from the driver.

A bendy bus trying to turn a corner has to drive slowly and carefully, and can knock down street furniture and mow down the odd pedestrian in the process.
There are bars and straps further inside the bus, but you probably won't be able to reach those because other people will be hanging onto them or just standing in front of them and blocking them.

Due to lack of space, people near the back of the bus tring to get off found it incredibly difficult as there was no space for the standing people to move into as they tried to get past.
The bus is supposed to be accessible, but it didn't seem very good.
There are no conductors on the bus as they were all made redundant with the ending of the Routemaster, and as the Oyster card readers don't work at present, most people were travelling for free.

Because of the multiple door access and double compartment the bendy has more of a 'tram' feel to it, which is fine.
This is probably something to do with the hydaulic suspension which allows the boarding step to get close enough to the kerb for the dreaded oversized pushchairs which modern day pre-school children insist on riding in.
So every time the bus goes over a bump the whole thing kind of snakes up and down a few times, which is enough, I would imagine, to make some people feel quite sick.

In your analogy, with the bus carrying 12 people taking up the same space of 3 cars, you claim that the 3 cars are worse for london than the bus.

Due to 3 Citaro Bendy bus engine fires totally burning the buses out, all Mercedes Citaro's running on TfL routes (apart form the fuel cell versions) were withdrawn for engine modifications for almost 2 weeks.
The bus is on route 176 in Holles Street, Oxford Circus on 29 March 2004.
The bus was there exactly at the time of the incident and police are appealing to witnesses on the bus(21/4/03) to come forward.
