Benedetto Bonfigli: The seizing of Perugia by Totila
The fresco recounts the tale of the martyrdom of Saint Ercolano, bishop of Perugia, during the siege waged against the city by the Goths led by Totila.
While faithful to the facts that are recounted, the episode also gave Bonfigli the pretext to celebrate the greatness of his Perugia, depicting the forest of high towers that then crowned Colle Landone, which were destroyed in the mid 1500s when the Forte Paolino was built.

 Pintoricchio - Biographical Information
His father was one Benedetto or Benedecto, and he was christened Bernardino Benedetto (afterwards shortened to Betto or Betti).
A document of 1502 exists at Siena, in which Pintoricchio is styled the son of Benedetto di Biagio, so that we thus learn the bare names of his father and grandfather.
There is sufficient suggestion of Benedetto Bonfigli in some of his work, to make it probable that he joined the school which Bonfigli had established in Perugia in the early part of the fifteenth century.

Maldi-Tof Used to Examine Renaissance Art
The approach revealed that Benedetto Bonfigli employed an unusual combination of binders in this triptych that depicts, from left, St. John the Baptist, The Virgin and Child, and St. Sebastian.
Once the methodology was developed, the researchers studied two Renaissance paintings that were chosen because of an interest in the paintings by the Musée du Louvre in Paris, a collaborating institution in the research.
They found, for example, that Benedetto Bonfigli's 15th-century triptych features a complex binder called tempera grassa that enabled the artist to achieve bright, shimmering effects.

When I came back from a week in Spain intrigued by Benedetto Bonfigli's "Annunciation" in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum there, I logged on to Grove to learn more about him.
While Samuel Sachs 2d, director of the Frick Collection, mentioned Watteau's "Embarkation to Cythera," for example, Grove has the work as "The Pilgrimage to Cythera." Better to go to Watteau, if you know he was the artist.
While I was happy learning more about Bonfigli's life, Grove provided only one image, a triptych in Perugia.

Mass Spectrometry Blog: Identification of Proteins in Renaissance Paintings by Proteomics
Analytical Chemistry (subscription required) has a unique article on the proteomic analysis of Renaissance paintings.
The authors worked with microgram quantities of paint from Benedetto Bonfigli's triptych, The Virgin and Child, St. John the Baptist, St. Sebastian (XVth century), and from Niccolo di Pietro Gerini's, The Virgin and Child (XIVth century) and found proteins from the egg yolk and white that were used as binders in the paint.
The presence of egg white is interesting in that the traditional recipe for tempera paint called for only the yolk, while the more radiant "tempera grassa" called for both the yolk and white.
