Benelux (or "Bénélux") is an economic union in Western Europe comprising three neighbouring monarchies, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg.
Its founding contributed to the founding of the European Union (EU), though the immediate precursors to the EU were founded later (the ECSC in 1951 and the EEC in 1957).
The treaty establishing the Benelux Economic Union (Benelux Economische Unie/Union Économique Benelux) was signed in 1958 and came into force in 1960 to promote the free movement of workers, capital, services, and goods in the region.

BENELUX was founded in 1947 as a CUSTOMS UNION, named after the first syllables of its three member states.
The Benelux failed to establish stronger institutions, because the three member states joined larger economic and military organizations - NATO in 1949, the EEC in 1957 (which later became the EU).
In essence, Benelux was a role model and testing ground for the EEC/EU; many of its treaties are extensions of Benelux policy.
