Benevolent dictator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The benevolent dictator is a more modern version of the classical "enlightened despot", being an undemocratic or authoritarian leader who exercises his or her political power for the benefit of the people rather than exclusively for his or her own self-interest or benefit, or for the benefit of only a small portion of the people.
In many cases dictators who serve in office for a very lengthy period are more likely to be regarded as benevolent, for the simple reason that they will often be forced to pay some attention to the public's interests in order to remain in power, and more importantly, be regarded as politically legitimate.
Dictators who hold office for a brief period of time, or are simply members of a rotating dictatorial elite (for example see the Generals) may have less charismatic authority and prove to be forgettable and easier to demonize.

Benevolent Dictator for Life - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Benevolent Dictator for Life (BDFL) is the informal, slightly tongue-in-cheek title given to a respected individual in the open source development community who sets general directions and makes final calls in certain situations within the scope of a given project.
Of course, a project coordinator cannot really be anything like a dictator in the sense that he or she ultimately cannot enforce a decision, since a project fork is always possible.
The title is a play on the concept of a benevolent dictator and a president for life.

A 'Benevolent Dictator' by Gail Jarvis
They admit that Lincoln was a dictator, but try to sanitize his actions as being those of a "benevolent dictator," dismissing his illegal and cruel acts as simply minor abuses of power.
Dictators do not feel bound by rules of law; their actions must not be questioned, they do not negotiate, and they silence or eliminate those who oppose their policies.
Like most dictators, he aggressively silenced and eliminated any opposition – primarily with "treason trials" for those he accused of "disloyalty." Conviction of treason was a foregone conclusion and those convicted were executed and their property confiscated.

Today, dictator is usually understood to mean a person who controls or governs a totalitarian or authoritarian regime, and usually carries a connotation of brutality and oppression.
Julius Caesar was named dictator for a 10 year term in 46 BC and "dictator for life" in 45, both irregular appointments.
A benevolent dictator is an undemocratic or authoritarian leader who uses his powers for the good of his people, and not just his own self interest.

 Benevolent Dictatorship
This means that the more benevolent a leader, the less democracy we need and the less benevolent a leader, the more democracy we need.
Benevolent Dictatorship, therefore, is not a matter of advocacy as is often brought to question whenever we praise the virtues of, say, Lee(Kuan Yew)ism or Mahathirism.
It is merely but one state (for that matter it is an extreme state) in the continuum of the inversely proportional relationship between benevolence and degree of democracy that I described in the preceding paragraph.

Jedi Council Forums - What is a "Benevolent" Dictatorship?
If there were a benevolent dictatorship, it would have to be an extremely small amount of people living under that government, and even then I doubt it could last beyond the reign of one dictator.
They are dictators who aren't interested in milking the people for every penny they're worth to consolidate their power but rather rule from what they believe to be the best of intentions.
It is possible to have a benevolent dictator, but not a benevolent dictatorship, as the instutionalized rule of a single person inevitably leads to problems.

Chapter 4. Social and Political Infrastructure
benevolent dictator model is exactly what it sounds like: final decision-making authority rests with one person, who, by virtue of personality and experience, is expected to use it wisely.
It is common for the benevolent dictator to be a founder of the project, but this is more a correlation than a cause.
Whether your project should have a benevolent dictator, or would run better with some less centralized system, largely depends on who is available to fill the role.

Essentially a dictator is the ruling party who does what he wants without regard to the will of the people - and he certainly does not pay much heed to the law of God.
As a matter of fact, a dictator does what he wants because he believes he is the supreme authority.
While the U.S. government certainly does not fit the strict dictionary definition of a dictator, in that it is comprised of many instead of one, and it allows elections where the people can choose from either of the pre-selected candidates, the other characteristics of a dictator ring some pretty loud bells.

The simplest non-trivial case is when a project has multiple co-maintainers working under a single `benevolent dictator' who owns the project.
Pursuing this logic, we see that a `benevolent dictator' does not in fact own his entire project absolutely.
By custom, the `dictator' or project leader in a project with co-developers is expected to consult with those co-developers on key decisions.
