The current generation of benga musicians have picked up the tempo set by the veterans, which has seen the popularity of their music growing beyond the borders of Nyanza, where it has its origins, and spreading right across the country.
Part of the popularity of benga arises from a lively rivalry between the splinter groups as they try to outdo each other in creating music that is as close as possible to what the original band used to play, while making it new enough to keep their fans happy.
For a large section of benga fans, though, the sensational lyrics are a major source of attraction, and have played a great role in the growth of the music's popularity.
