  Dum-Dum - LoveToKnow 1911
DUM-DUM, a town and cantonment in British India at the head of an administrative subdivision in the district of the Twenty-four Parganas, in the presidency division of Bengal, with a station on the Eastern Bengal railway, 41 m.
It was the headquarters of the Bengal artillery from 1783 to 1853, when they were transferred to Meerut as a more central station; and its possession of a cannon foundry and a percussion-cap factory procured for it the name of the Woolwich of India.
It was at Dum-Dum that the treaty of 1757 was signed by which the nawab of Bengal ratified the privileges of the English, allowed Calcutta to be fortified, and bestowed freedom of trade.

In 1857 a new rifle cartridge which must be bitten open before loading is thought by the troops to be greased with pig fat and hence seen as a religious defilement.
The mutiny spreads to Delhi with Europeans soon being killed mercilessly throughout Bengal.

There were approximately 100 Gunners of 1st Coy Bengal Artillery (now 9 Plassey Battery RA) reinforced by 50 naval ratings from HMS Tiger, together with 150 Lascars.
Captain William jennings commanded the Artillery with 3 6 pounder guns on either flank.
At that date the indian guns were still being loaded and primed with loose powder by ladies and a sudden downpour would have rendered it, and therefore the guns, temporarily useless.

 Battle of Chillianwallah - The Sikh Wars
The pitching of camp by the Army of the Punjab was interrupted when a battery of Sikh artillery advanced and opened fire on the British and Bengalis, until they were forced to retire by the fire of Gough’s heavy artillery.
The whole of the Sikh artillery into action and it became clear that the Sikhs had advanced well forward from their fortified position and that battle was imminent.
In many instances the charges were delivered when regiments of Bengal Light Cavalry baulked at clashing with the feared Sikhs, leaving the 3rd to attack unsupported and against overwhelming odds, the officers and soldiers knowing the Sikhs gave no quarter and inflicted appalling wounds with their razor sharp kirpans.

 Science Fair Projects - Hastings Edward Harington
He was 25 years old, and a Lieutenant in the Bengal Artillery, Indian Army during the Indian Mutiny when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.
According to a small volume published by Nisbet and Co, Berners Street, British Army Scripture Readers' and Soldier's Friend Society, (1862) his military career began on June 12 1852 when he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Bengal Artillery.
Shortly after his arrival in India he proceeded on service with the Sikkim Field Force and was afterwards appointed adjutant 6th Battalion Bengal Artillery at Agra where he died from cholera on July 20.

It was frequently in action, most notably during the siege of Pondichery in 1793, the Nepal war 1814 and the second siege of Bhurtpore in 1805, the Nepal war 1814 and the second siege of Bhurtpore in 1825.
During the first relief of lucknow, Captain Olpherts or “Hellfire Jack” as he was known (later General Sir William Olpherts) won the Victoria Cross for conspicuous gallantry; he charged the enemy on horseback and captured two rebel guns which were pouring fire onto the flanks of the advancing forces.
To commemorate this distinction on 19th October 1966, the honour title “OLPHERTS” was awarded to 56 Battery Royal Artillery as the direct descendants of Captain Olpherts Battery.

 Napoleon Series Reviews: Osprey Napoleonic Artillery
In the last couple of years Osprey has published an excellent series of volumes on artillery of the Napoleonic period.  There are five volumes that are worthy of note and that are handy references for a myriad or artillery questions that may come up from time to time.
Errors are few and far between, and nearly imperceptible.  The only two I found were on plate D1 of Henry's field artillery volume which incorrectly identify the trunnions and axletree of the British 9-pounder.  It is undoubtedly an oversight.
Rockets are not covered in the British field artillery volume either, though they are in Volume 2.  This would have been helpful and quite illustrative of a new weapon that was employed on battlefields both in Europe and North America.

He was, however, almost immediately made "Assistant-adjutant-general to the artillery" a new appointment which Lord Hastings appears to have created in order to retain Pollock on the staff, and which he held with credit to himself and advantage to his regiment until he received his commission as Lieutenant-colonel on the 1st May, 1824.
He was present, as commanding officer of artillery, with General Cotton's division at the storming of the stockades at Simbike, in front of Prome, and at the defeat of the Shaans on the 1st December, 1825, when the Commander-in-chief, in his despatches, made favourable mention of his service.
He returned to India in 1830, and was posted to the command of a battalion of artillery at Cawnpore, where he remained until, owing to his standing in the service, he was nominated early in 1838 as Brigadier general to command the division at Dinapore.
