Westphalia Township is in western Clinton County, Michigan, about 15 miles southwest of St. Johns and 20 miles northwest of Lansing, the state capitol.
According to an agricultural census in that year, the township generated 100,000 feet of lumber, 200 barrels of flour, 92 barrels of cider, and 54 barrels of beer.
The township included 16,324 acres of taxable land, of which 5,841 acres were improved.

Officials at the wildlife center, directly west of the land, and hundreds of residents objected to the number of apartments proposed and their proximity to the center.
In his ruling, Martlew said the township "gave adequate consideration to adjacent land uses, the natural environment and the health, safety and welfare of the township" when it granted the permit.

Raymond and Richard both grew up in Bengal township and attended the same school and did not know they were brothers (much less twins) until they were teenagers.
