Between 1999 and 2003, the legendary Morrissey was unable to find a record contract at all (at least one that satisfied his demands).
Accusations of racism meant he spent much of the 1990s maligned, based upon songs such as "Bengali In Platforms" and "The National Front Disco" as well as an ill-advised performance at the first Madness re-union show at Finsbury Park, London draped in the Union Flag.
He was given the one-time reggae label Attack as a platform to record new material and, reportedly, to sign new artists.

because it is. Bengali in Platforms is a condensation of the Buddha of Suburbia, and although the lyrics are, to an extent, deeply provocative ("life is hard enough when you belong here"), it is in no way as bombastic as later songs like The National Front Disco.
The much-maligned "Bengali In Platforms" may seem rather insensitive in these PC days, but is more of a naive and innocent, "common man's" observation.

While accusations of racism were spurious for "Panic," revolving around Morrissey's reasons for wanting to "Hang the DJ", tactless lyricism on the album's "Bengali In Platforms" leaves it open to a racist interpretation.

Yet when he turns his peculiar muse outward and abandons tried-and-true musical approaches, the results are brilliant.
"Bengali in Platforms" skewers elitist fashion (and fashionable racism) on a gilded stick, while "Little Man, What Now?" deftly portrays an aging child star's ongoing public humiliation via the tube.
Both songs convey a sense of compassion without stooping to cant or pathos, and both allow Vini Reilly to stretch out and noodle cosmically over mechanized percussion in the ineffable style of Durutti Column.

Second, there are plenty of strong singles here, including Suedhead, Everday Is Like Sunday, and Bengali in Platforms.
While some of the songs are too long like Margaret on the Guillotine, overall the songs are Morrissey at his pop music best, the songs full of melancholy, angst, irony, all packaged in a wall of guitar sound to soothe those of us who would surely miss the jangling aching guitar sound of Johnny Marr.
Bengali in Platforms seems underdeveloped, and lacking Morrissey's brutal emotional punch.
