The mining regions were found in the regions of Bengkayang, Lumar, Batu Mountains, the Ambawang river, Darit, the Landak and Ayak rivers, the Cempedak Tayan delta, the Tayan river, Kembayan, Timur Senaning and upstream regions of the Kapuas river around Putussibau.
Bengkayang is a small but strategically located town in the Bengkayang district, Sambas regency, about 20 kilometers northeast of Pontianak.
Bengkayang connects various small cities in the Sambas regency with the West Kalimantan hinterland.

The hinterland and the mountains, East of Sambas, which is now Kabupaten Bengkayang, is populated mainly by the Dayak, whereas Singkawang is a town of multiple ethnic groups, dominated by the Chinese.
In the case of Kabupaten Sambas and Bengkayang, other ethnic groups, except the Madura, can live peacefully side by side with the Melayu and Dayak, since they always honor the rights and the culture of the dominant ethnic group.
This was not the case with the Madura, who tended to impose their own ways on others, including to the indigenous majority people, triggering conflicts from time to time.

In Bengkayang, at about8:00 p.m., an army unit fired on a large crowd of Dayaks who were trying to attack a military post where they heard Madurese had sought refuge.
Hearing that the troubles had spread beyond Sanggau Ledo to Bengkayang, the subdistrict head (camat) of Samalantan, to the west of Bengkayang, joined with local police and military commanders to call a meeting of Dayak and Madurese community leaders, in which Madurese were urged to surrender their knives in exchange for Dayak guarantees of security.
Houses were burning in the subdistricts of Sanggau Ledo, Ledo, Samalantan, Bengkayang, Tujuh Belas and the city of Singkawang.

The statement was issued in May, at a 3-day meeting of villagers from the remote Niut mountains, in Landak and Bengkayang districts of West Kalimantan.
The area is the customary land of the Semambang, Sebiak, Busuti, Sepadakng, Kemayo, Entoro and Soong indigenous Dayak groups.
It agreed to demand that the district governments in Landak and Bengkayang provide education and health facilities, roads, bridges and electricity to develop the community's economic potential in the Niut mountains.

Dominated by the Conservations and Self Transcendence domains of the values, the three ethnics tend to preserve their respective cultures and will do anything, including violence if necessary, to prevent other ethnics' expansion toward their culture.
The Dayak and the Melayu have been living in peaceful coexistence for a years, although they are culturally very different, because they are both indigenous ethnics, majorities and mostly live in different areas (Melayu live in Sambas coastal area, Dayak live in Bengkayang hinterland area).
In daily live, in urban areas or in public places, the Melayu and the Dayak hardly interact to each other because they are both mostly farmers.

In addition to land transport, wood smuggling to Sarawak also took place through 98 rivers, including 11 large ones, linking the two regions.
The alleged main gates for wood smuggling to Malaysia are Nanga Badau in Kapuas Hulu district (wood-working products), Jagoi Babang in Bengkayang district (logs), Paloh Village of Sambas district (logs), Senaning Village of Sintang district (logs) and Pouring Kencana Village of Kapuas Hulu (logs).
Monitoring by the Kapuas Hulu forestry office showed that wood smuggled through Nanga Badau subdistrict reached 23,806 trucks or 95,232 cubic meters of wood-based products, which are equal to 190,464 cubic meters of logs.
