In northern Angola the railway (metre gauge) from Loanda was carried to Malanje (375 m.) and was bought in July 1918 by the Portuguese Government.
The surrender of the Germans in SouthWest Africa to Gen. Botha, in July 1915, removed the German menace to Angola and gave the province the British (South Africans) as neighbours on the south.
The then governorgeneral of Angola, Senhor Norton de Mattos, had already instituted reforms and in 1913 had created a Department for Native Affairs, which set itself to regulate the employment of natives, including the recruitment of labourers for the cocoa plantations on St. Thome and Principe Islands.

Geology.—The rock formations of Angola are met with in three distinct regions: (1) the littoral zone, (2) the median zone formed by a series of hills more or less parallel with the coast, (3) the central plateau.

Benguella (São Felipe de Benguella), is a town in Angola, capital of Benguella district, on a bay of the same name, in 12° 33’ S., 13° 25’ E. Benguella was founded in 1617 by the Portuguese under Manoel Cerveira Pereira[?].
It was long the centre of an important trade, especially in slaves to Brazil and Cuba.
A short way beyond Benguella is Bahia Tarta[?], where salt is manufactured and sulphur excavated.

It is the port terminus of the railway that runs from Beira in Mozambique through the Copper Belt of Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Due to the civil war in Angola, which lasted more than 20 years, up to 2001, this railway is not operating any more.

I was wondering why no one ever comes up with plans to generate a hydropower plant along the two strongest ocean currents, namely the Benguella and Agulhas down south.
This indeed is a vital point to deliberate on and I asked myself where our science students from the two institutions of higher learning are.
The only viable possibilities are the Epupa and Poppa, but this has landed in the political pressure cooker - not to be touched.
