Benham is small Harlan county town on Looney Creek between Cumberland and Lynch.
The town was built in 1911 by the Wisconsin Steel Corporation, a part of International Harvester, and named for the Benham Spur, a nearby ridge.
The post office opened in 1900 as Yowell and was renamed Benham in 1911.

Under the leadership of the Benham Garden Club, with the help of many from the Tri-Cities, Harlan County and beyond, this 6' 8" statue was purchased through a dedicated community fund raising effort.
Benham Mayor, Betty Howard expressed the thoughts of many when she said ``To me, coal miners exemplify courage.
I think this is a tremendous honor for the miners, it is not just for Benham miners, but for everyone that has worked in the mining industry," Mayor Howard also stated that ``The statute has a little bit of everybody in it, that's why it reminds people of a miner they know or knew.''

The nearby town of Benham already has a coal museum that attracts 30,000 people a year and an inn that was created from an old coal company school.
He tells them that over a 40-year span, more than 1 million tons of coal per year passed through Portal 31, and that Lynch's tipple -- the place coal is loaded onto rail cars -- was the largest in the world when it was built in the early 1920s.
Lunsford expects the tourists who are already stopping at the coal museum to plunk down $5 each to tour the coal mine after historical exhibits are built inside.
