Knowing that Beniamino Gigli, resided in his personal villa on Via Serchio 2, I phoned and asked if it would be possible for me to give an audition to which he willingly agreed.
Gigli accepted on the condition that he sing together with the best young lyric singers of the moment, in order to promote a singing contest to select the most beautiful voices in Palermo at that time.

In the summer of 1921, Beniamino Gigli was seated at the Sferisterio watching Verdi’s Aida and, according to Pier Alberto Conti, after the performance, he congratulated Francisca Solari, the much acclaimed star of Verdi’s opera.
Beniamino Gigli saw this headstone and thanked everybody, but when he saw the very last lines “the Sferisterio Association had placed”, he humourously reminded, whoever was in charge, that he was still living!
Beniamino Gigli, as a singer, went back to Macerata in 1930 singing triumphally for the local Prefecture of the city, but an unpleasant and unpredictable “finale” was created.

This applies to De Curtis, whom Gigli did so much to popularise on disc and the honeyed Nutile which, despite a few catches in the throat and emotive pleading, is a superb example of his art in lighter material.

Unfortunately, Gigli was not the best musician in the opera house and later in his career he adopted mannerisms that became annoying.
There is very little of that here, although in 'E lucevan le stelle' (from Tosca) there are the intrusive sobs and portamenti that later became such a part of his style.

Linking to his appearance at the Met, 'Victor' began a long association of recordings both acoustic and electric, and this album from Romophone is the 1st of 3 dealing with this period.
Gigli's tone developed to its full during these recs, parallel with some intrusive bad vocal habits - nobody needs to use aspirates at all, and certainly not to the degree of Gigli.
