Benihana (restaurant) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Benihana is the name of a chain of Japanese restaurants known for the flavor of its food as much as the showmanship with which it is prepared in front of the customers.
For many years, Benihana was the face of Japanese cuisine within America, thanks both to corporate-owned and franchise locations through the country and the novelty of preparing food in front of patrons.
Benihana's famous figural "tiki mugs" for exotic cocktails, the most common of which depicts "Hotei" a chubby buddha-like figure with arms raised in the air, have become highly collectible.

It was called Benihana of Tokyo, and its founder, a young Japanese Olympic wrestler named Rocky Aoki, has since nurtured his theme into America's Most Popular Family Restaurant, and an international food chain.
The name "Benihana" comes from the poetic Japanese words for red flower, with the origin of the story actually dating back to 1935 when the late Yunosuke Aoki (Rocky's Father) opened a small coffee shop and called it "Benihana" after a wild red flower that grew near the front door.
Benihana's food preparation methods immediately set it apart from other restaurants, as it had no conventional kitchen.

Benihana is the only restaurant I've ever been to in which the customers are cooked alongside the food.
For those who've never been to a Benihana--and it boasts of being the largest Asian-themed restaurant chain in the world--the food is cooked teppanyaki-style which means an individual chef is assigned to your table and cooks it in front of you.
Looking around, it soon became clear that Benihana is best suited to groups of six or more since that's the minimum number that have to be seated at each table.

Time has served it well in the looks department, we found on a recent visit, with some 20 years of landscaping and nature's slow process having turned its exterior appearance from a plastic-style suburban eatery into something with a hint of the grace and style of a Japanese garden.
