Civiletti was educated at The Johns Hopkins University, where he received a bachelor's degree in psychology, and at the University of Maryland School of Law in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was awarded a JD in 1961.
Civiletti was serving as the Deputy Attorney General, when his boss Griffin B. Bell resigned.

In 1978, Civiletti was commissioned to investigate the cocaine case involving White House Chief of Staff, Hamilton Jordan and Steve Rubell, one of the owners of the New York nightclub Studio 54.
Civiletti himself became a subject of media scrutiny in connection with the investigation of Carter’s brother, Billy Carter, who acted as an agent for Libya but failed to register as a foreign agent, as required by law.

Civiletti, who specializes in litigation, antitrust law and white-collar defense, topped the National Law Journal's 16th annual survey of hourly rates at more than 100 of the country's top law firms.
Civiletti cruised past the survey's previous record of $875 an hour to a rate that is hundreds of dollars higher than senior partners at some of Washington's and New York's largest law firms, according to the National Law Journal.
Civiletti, who also does pro bono work, estimated that he puts in about 1,800 hours a year, far less than the 2,400 he used to work.
