Cleveland, the seat of White County, is located seventy-five miles north of Atlanta in northeast Georgia.
The state representative William Shelton proposed that the county seat be named Cleveland in honor of his friend, General Benjamin Cleveland, a prominent citizen of Habersham County.
Cleveland is the home of Babyland General Hospital, the "birthplace" of the Cabbage Patch Kid dolls that became a phenomenon during the 1980s.

Joseph CLEVELAND was born in NY, 23 Feb 1806, a son of Benjamin and Lydia CLEVELAND, natives of RI; they moved to NY in an early day, resided in Crawford County, PA, a few years, later moved to OH, thence to MI, and next to IL.
Benjamin CLEVELAND died in IL at a very old age, and Lydia CLEVELAND afterward went to IA, where she died at the home of her son, LaFayette.
Benjamin CLEVELAND then bought out the eight heirs, erected a good residence in 1884, and is now building one of the finest barns in the county.

Cleveland escaped, with the help of his brother Robert Cleveland and others, and shortly thereafter Riddle was caught and hanged by Cleveland, or possibly shot and mortally wounded by Benjamin Greer, according to other accounts.

Benjamin Cleveland was born May 26, 1738, near Bull Run (later of Civil War fame), in Prince William County, Va. As he grew to manhood, he received little if any education beyond the lessons that a hazardous life on the frontier could teach.
