Benjamin Dann Walsh (1808-1869) was born in Great Britain and educated at Oxford.
Walsh became state entomologist of Illinois in 1867 and, with Charles Valentine Riley, founded the American Entomologist in 1868, a year before his death.
The last pages of volume two contain an account of the founding of the Rock Island County branch of the Kansas Settlers Society of Chicago, June 12-25, 1856; Walsh was an officer and member of the Executive Committee of this body.

WALSH, Benjamin Dann, entomologist, born in Frome, Worcestershire, England, 21 September, 1808; died in Rock Island, Illinois, 18 November, 1869.
He was graduated at Cambridge, and it was the desire of his parents that he should study for the ministry, his own inclinations led him into literary work, and he wrote extensively for periodicals, including a pamphlet on university reforms, almost all the suggestions in which he lived to see practically carried out.
Walsh was associated with Charles V. Riley in founding the " American Entomologist "in 1868, and was its senior editor until his death.

Benjamin Dann Walsh was born at Frome, in England, in 1808, and died in America in 1869, from the result of a railway accident.
Walsh describes it to be: "You cannot have the remotest conception of the ideas of even our best- educated Americans as to the pursuit of science.
Walsh shows that a complete gradation exists between species which are absolutely unaffected by change of food and cases where "difference of food is accompanied by marked and constant differences, either colorational, or structural, or both, in the larva, pupa and imago states."

Benjamin Dann Walsh, Illinois state entomoligist from 1867 to 1869, was a pioneer in the application of insect study to agriculture.
Born in England on September 21, 1808, he was intended for the ministry.
Walsh contributed regularly to the Prairie Farmer, Valley Farmer, and Illinois Farmer, was an editor of the Practical Entomologist, and was co-founder and editor of the American Entomologist with Riley.
