Leonard Rossiter.com: The Immortal Haydon   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
It was Haydon's ambition to become the greatest historical painter England had ever known, and devoted his life to painting extremely large, yet somewhat dull, canvases, including biblical and classical subjects such as "The Judgement Of Solomon" (1814), "Christ's Entry Into Jerusalem" (1820) and "The Raising Of Lazarus" (1823).
Even a century after his death, the bad luck of Benjamin Haydon was still evident: The Judgement Of Solomon, painted in 1814 and one of Haydon's personal favourites, turned up at a London auction room in 1960, rolled up in a dirty table-cloth, faded and cracked, and labelled as "Italian school, circa 1730".
Haydon's devotion to the education of the people in art resulted in him becoming a Freeman of Plymouth, his native city, but also resulted in deep financial debt.

Haydon, it seems, was always quarrelling (not least with patrons), and he was always struggling to make ends meet, especially after the annual income from his father was discontinued.
Haydon was probably an overly ambitious painter and a difficult person, but he was a good writer.

James Fenton on painter Benjamin Haydon's autobiography | | Guardian Unlimited Arts
Reynolds, Northcote, Haydon and Eastlake - they were painters and they were also all writers, but Haydon was by far the most remarkable writer of them all.
But Haydon's autobiography makes appalling sense: no one has expressed better what it is like to fail as an artist, to be taken up by society, to find yourself dropped, to feel rivalry with the living and with the dead, to make enemies both inadvertently and deliberately, to yearn for some great achievement.
Haydon's high-mindedness was just like the high-mindedness of Keats, who sent Haydon his sonnet beginning "Great spirits now on earth are sojourning" (with its opening evocation of Wordsworth).

Benjamin Robert Haydon would doubtless be flattered, though a bit surprised, by his inclusion in a volume on Romantic prose writers.
His fame rests first, as he would have wanted, on his reputation as a historical painter and figure of controversy in the art world of Regency London, and second on his friendships with John Keats, William Wordsworth, and other notable British Romantic writers.
