Benjamin Jowett - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Benjamin Jowett (April 15, 1817 – October 1, 1893) was an English scholar and theologian, Master of Balliol College, Oxford.
Jowett was thus led to concentrate his attention on theology, and in the summers of 1845 and 1846, spent in Germany with Stanley, he became an eager student of German criticism and speculation.
In the midst of other labours Jowett had been quietly exerting his influence so as to conciliate all shades of liberal opinion, and bring them to bear upon the abolition of the theological test, which was still required for the M.A. and other degrees, and for university and college offices.

This petty persecution was continued until 1865, when E. Freeman and Charles Elton discovered by historical research that a breach of the conditions of the professorship had occurred, and Christ Church raised the endowment from 40 a year to 500.
In the midst of other labors Jowett had been quietly exerting his influence so as to conciliate all shades of liberal opinion, and bring them to bear upon the abolition of the theological test, which was still required for the M.A. and other degrees, and for university and college offices.
The pulpit of St Marys was no longer closed to him, but the success of Balliol in the schools gave rise to jealousy in other colleges, and old prejudices did not suddenly give way; while a new movement in favor of the endowment of research ran counter to his immediate purposes.

Benjamin Jowett Biography / Biography of Benjamin Jowett Biography
The English educator and Greek scholar Benjamin Jowett (1817-1893) is famous for his translation of the dialogues of Plato and for his academic reforms at Oxford.
Benjamin Jowett was born on April 15, 1817, at Camberwell, London.
Jowett's view of Plato's thought, which is one of the leading interpretations, was that no unified or comprehensive systematic philosophy exists in Plato, that his view changes in different dialogues, and that in some no definite conclusion is ever reached.

 THE PLAGUE, by Benjamin Jowett
After listing features of the Plague in Thucydides (2.47), Jowett invites us to compare Thucydides' view of human behavior in the disaster with accounts of other great plagues, especially Gibbon on the great Plague of Constantinople (542 A.D.) and Boccaccio on the plague in Florence (1348 A.D.).
Benjamin Jowett presents "The Plague" as an appendix to the notes on Book 2 in his first (1881) edition of Thucydides, Vol.
For a different translation of Boccaccio's account of the plague of Florence at the beginning of his Decameron, including a few sentences at the end which are not presented by Jowett, see the Richard Hooker translation Washington State University's World Civilizations Internet classroom.

 Jowett, Benjamin
On being defeated for the mastership of Balliol in 1854, Jowett, in his disappointment, took up with renewed energy a work that he and Stanley had projected on St. Paul, and published The Epistles of St. Paul to the Thessalonians, Galatians, arid Romans: with Critical Notes and Dissertations (2 vols., London, 1855).
This work brought forth a storm of protest from conservative quarters; and when, in the same year, Jowett was appointed regius professor of Greek at Oxford, those who condemned his views at once began to oppose him.
He was waiting to attain to greater clearness and certainty, hoping that these would come with time; but the exhausting labors which he took upon himself as master of Balliol after 1870, and as vice-chancellor of the university 1882-86, left him no leisure for elaborating his views.

A Remark by Benjamin Jowett   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The choice of Jowett, one of the major Oxford figures of his age, makes a much more specific point, since Jowett, who is today most famous for his graceful translations of Plato, was hardly a philistine.
At various times Master of Balliol, Regius Professor of Greek, and Vice Chancellor of the University, Jowett was an enormously influential religious liberal and Broad Church Anglican.
From the vantage point of the aesthetic value of the Grail legend, this plate therefore mocks Jowett; but from the vantage point of Beerbohm's own modern approach to belief, it mocks the Pre-Raphaelite and Rossettian longing for mystery.

Jowett was probably homosexually inclined, but he also had a strong aversion to sexual intercourse: "There is not the slightest indication that Jowett ever knew by direct or deliberate experience the quality of sexual enjoyment," his biographer concludes.
As one of the leading classicists of his age, Jowett certainly knew that his translations were less than honest.
