  BENJAMIN KOWALEWICZ : Encyclopedia Entry
Benjamin Kowalewicz (born in Montreal, December 16, 1975, of Polish ancestry) is the lead singer in the Canadian alternative rock group Billy Talent.
Kowalewicz and D'Sa wrote the song "Nothing To Lose" after Kowalewicz had read in a newspaper article that a student had been bullied and then killed himself; the song became a smash hit across Canada and Europe.
Kowalewicz worked in a number of positions at Toronto radio station 102.1 the Edge, where he would also run errands such as getting coffee for The Ongoing History of New Music host Alan Cross prior to the 2003 release of Billy Talent's eponymous album.

It may be their first time to Nottingham, but recent tours with Sum 41 and The Buzzcocks, along with slots on this year’s Lollapalooza tour and Reading festival, have ensured that tonight Billy Talent are playing to an extremely busy and excited Rock City crowd.
And singer Benjamin Kowalewicz is not holding back in the slightest either, screaming his lungs out throughout as he jumps around the stage.
There’s a close connection between Billy Talent and their audience, with plenty of in-between song banter from Benjamin, and this is definitely one of their greatest strengths.

For the new album, band members Benjamin Kowalewicz (vocals), Ian D'Sa (guitar), Jon Gallant (bass), and Aaron Solowoniuk (drums) worked with producer Gavin Brown to record 13 songs that underline the group's accessible melodies, distinct writing, and balanced arrangements.
As a lyricist, Benjamin superbly expresses himself from the perspective of other people's frustrations.
In fact, Benjamin delivers these despondent perspectives in such a real and convincing manner that he comes across as much the schizophrenic as he does the grand storyteller.

Though the band is now considered a mainstream act, Kowalewicz says that their lyrical content is one of the things that separates them from the pop stars.
Kowalewicz’s own point of view, however, is definitely not excluded in songs like “How it Goes,” a track that deals with a friend being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
Kowalewicz says it was an important issue to tackle.

The tune also features a rare guitar solo, and vocalist Benjamin Kowalewicz’s voice is quite Johnny Rotton-esque in this particular instance.
Billy Talent’s unavoidable passion and spiked hooks do a better job of keeping the interest level high than any gimmick ever could anyhow, so it was wise for Brown to leave things well enough alone.
This recording’s literacy level is also quite high, as Kowalewicz throws in some real lyrical zingers here.

However, Kowalewicz can also sound empathetic, as in the dark "Nothing To Lose," in which a friendless schoolboy loses all hope in life and commits suicide before his 18th birthday.
Guitarist Ian D'Sa's soft rhythmic chords flow throughout the song and meld perfectly with the appropriately with Aaron Solowoniuk's subtle drumbeats.
Fans of good rock music shouldn't miss the chance to hear Kowalewicz's original brand of clever and passionate libretto or Talent's debut album in general, as it will surely be one of punk-rock's most memorable achievements.

Every now and again a punk band comes along that changes the rules, a band that twists their influences into shapes that haven't been heard before.
Maybe it was the pressure of a debut London show, but when the sound problems migrated to his own microphone it quickly ended up buried in the drum kit, along with an accompanying stand.
Angular At The Drive-In riffs support Kowalewicz's muppet-on-speed stage antics, and all but drummer Aaron Solowoniuk contribute to the yelped, screamed and shouted vocals.

The self-titled debut album from Canadian pop-punkers Billy Talent finds the group foregoing the usual sing-song jokiness of bands like Blink 182 in favor of an old school approach that recalls everything from the original British punk of the Buzzcocks to 1980s L.A. hardcore.
Charismatic lead vocalist Benjamin Kowalewicz has a strident delivery that combines the in-your-face whine of vintage Jello Biafra with the anthemic shouts of Jane's Addiction's Perry Farrell.

The rest of the band, guitarist Ian D’sa, bassist Jon Gallant, and drummer Aaron Solowoniuk, have provided us with well-crafted music that complements the lyrics, which range from stories about a drugged out prostitute to childhood abuse, like the Earth to the sky.
To delve into an analysis of each song would be rather pointless; each track is as vibrant and as notable as the next.
Though, if I had to say anything negative about this band, the only thing I can pinpoint is that the Kowalewicz’ high-pitched wails might be something of an acquired taste.

Billy Talent, hailing from Canada, were one of the first acts of the day, playing the side stage right after The Distillers, fronted by Brody Armstrong, crucified on the main platform giving a bloody, daredevil punk-o-rama vibe to the earlier part of the festivities.
Billy Talent, the four-piece, were clearly steeped in a Black Flag foundation with hints of a Hanoi Rocks sense of glam, and vocalist Benjamin Kowalewicz also proclaimed their affection to a fan wearing a Fugazi shirt in the well-sized crowd for their early exhibition.
