Atlanta, Georgia, Former Cars' bassist Benjamin Orr, AKA Benjamin Orzechowski, born September 8, 1947 in Cleveland Ohio, has lost his five-month battle with pancreatic cancer.
Orr (shortened from Orzechowski) is a native Ohioan, born in Lakewood to Russian and Czechoslovakian parents.
Orr's natural talent as a performer and guitarist made him the perfect addition to The Cars, a band formed by Ocasek in Boston in 1976.

Benjamin Orr (September 8, 1947 – October 3, 2000) was the bass guitar player and one of the vocalists for New Wave band The Cars.
Orr was born Benjamin Orzechowski in Lakewood, Ohio, to Russian and Czechoslovakian parents.
Benjamin Orr also played with Ric Ocasek as a duo, called Milkwood, which released one album, which is now regarded by Cars fans as a collectible.

Orr, who was 53, grew up in Cleveland and began performing as a teenager, fronting the house band in a local American Bandstand spinoff.
Orr stayed in Boston for a few years after the Cars' break-up in 1987, playing the clubs with his own band (whose keyboardist, Igor Khoroshev, went on to join Yes).
Accompanied by his girlfriend, Orr was distressingly thin and confined to a wheelchair.

Benjamin Orr, singer and bassist with new wave hitmakers the Cars, succumbed to cancer at his home in Atlanta on Tuesday night.
As previously reported by MTV News, Orr, born Benjamin Orzechowski on September 8, 1947, had been hospitalized last May with what turned out to be inoperable pancreatic cancer (see "The Cars' Benjamin Orr Hospitalized").
Orr had reunited with his former Cars bandmates -- Ocasek, Hawkes, Elliot Easton and David Robinson -- this past summer for an interview to be included on a new DVD documentary, "The Cars Live," scheduled for release through Rhino Home Video on November 1.

ATLANTA (AP) -- Benjamin Orr, the bass player of the popular 1980s group The Cars who also sang some of the band's most popular songs, died Tuesday of pancreatic cancer.
Orr, born Benjamin Orzechowski in Cleveland, formed The Cars in Boston in 1976 with fellow Ohio native Ric Ocasek.
Orr had also reunited with his former Cars mates for a documentary titled, "The Cars Live." Rhino Home Video plans to release the production in November with part of the proceeds going to the National Pancreas Foundation.

To all fans of the Cars and visitors to Heartbeat City, it is with great regret that I inform you that Benjamin Orr passed away on Tuesday, October 3, 2000.
I had the pleasure of meeting Ben in 1997 on two occasions: first in Fairfax,Virginia, and then in the Cars hometown of Boston with his last band, ORR, both at the invitation of John Kalishes, a close friend of Ben, and at the time, a member of the band.
Ben was as friendly and sweet as you can imagine, and my only regret is that this took place before Alan and I met, and we never got the chance to see Ben in concert together.

Bassist Ben Orr, who sang deep, rich leads on several of the band’s biggest hits, including “My Best Friend’s Girl,” “Let’s Go,” “Candy-O,” “Drive” and “Just What I Needed,” passed away from on Oct. 3, 2000, at the age of 53.
The Cars continue to be a staple on Album Rock radio and an influence on many of today’s bands, especially with the rise of such recent ‘80s-influenced groups as The Killers, Interpol, The Bravery, and Hot Hot Heat.
