General Grant tells Prentiss to, "Maintain that position at all hazards." Repeated attacks are turned away as the rebel soldiers exclaim, "its a hornet's nest in there." Twelve full scale assaults are launched against the "hornet's nest" and all twelve fail.

Prentiss held out till about 5:30 and then surrendered with 2,200 troops-all that remained of the 2 divisions.
Prentiss was not far from the Hornet's Nest when he was captured.

In March of 1863, Major General Benjamin Prentiss assumed command of Union forces at Helena and immediately began to strengthen the town’s defenses.
To supplement Fort Curtis, an earth fort on the western edge of the town, Prentiss placed cannon, protected by breastworks and rifle pits, on four hills that formed a rough semicircle around the town.
Prentiss also had about 300 fl soldiers of the 2nd Arkansas Volunteer Infantry Regiment (African Descent), one of the first African American regiments recruited in Arkansas during the war.
