Benjamin Thorpe (1782 - July, 1870) was an English Anglo-Saxon scholar.
After studying for four years at Copenhagen University, under the Danish philologist Rasmus Christian Rask, he returned to England in 1830, and in 1832 published an English version of Caedmon's metrical paraphrase of portions of the Holy Scriptures, which at once established his reputation as an Anglo-Saxon scholar.
Thorpe died at Chiswick in July of 1870.

The present edition is based on Thorpe's 1834 edition and translation of the Old English Apollonius of Tyre, of which the only surviving copy is found in MS Corpus Christi College Cambridge 201, dated to the mid-11th century.
Thorpe's preface and translation were scanned and corrected from the 1834 edition.
Thorpe reproduces two Old English symbols commonly used by scribes, for which there are as yet no HTML character tags.
