BENJAMIN WEST - LoveToKnow Article on BENJAMIN WEST
According to a well-known story, he was sitting by the cradle of his sister's child, watching its sleep, when the infant happened to smile in its dreams, and, struck with its beauty, young Benjamin got some paper, and drew its portrait.
The career thus begun was prosecuted amid many difficulties; but his perseverance overcame every obstacle, and at the age of eighteen he settled in Philadelphia as a portrait-painter.
West's works, which fond criticism ranked during his life with the great productions of the old masters, are now considered as in general formal, tame, wanting that freedom of nature and that life which genius alone can breathe into the canvas.

 BENJAMIN WEST 1738-
Pennsylvania-born Benjamin West settled in London in 1763, where he became a key contributor to the establishment of history painting in Britain.
The revived enthusiasm for classical antiquity to which West was introduced while studying in Rome from 1760-1763 remained part of his style after he settled in London and turned increasingly to subjects outside classical history and literature.
And, like other artists of his generation, West became interested in the techniques of the Italian seventeenth -century painters, exemplified here by the landscape setting, the brilliant color of Mary Magdalene's orange-yellow dress, and by the radiant angel astride the entrance of the empty tomb.

West, he proclaimed, was "incontrovertibly the father of American painting." (2) Flexner's defensive tone suggests a complication, which Dunlap implicitly confronted in his first sentence on West, a flat declaration that the painter was "indigenous." The trajectory of West's career has always made his distinction as an American problematic.
West eventually enlarged his sights with the guidance of modest fellow provincials: a governess who instructed the boy in ancient history and poetry and a gunsmith who urged West to look beyond portraiture to history painting, thereby licensing him to focus on a genre never fully accepted by Americans.
West did not disappoint them; in a flash of recognition, according to Galt, he exclaimed: "My God, how like it is to a young Mohawk warrior!" (9) It seems unlikely that West had ever seen a Mohawk or any other Indian warrior, and his response was overdetermined, plotted in advance, perhaps, and surely embellished later.

In his painting of the death of Wolfe, West had the courage to repudiate the traditions of the classical school, in abandoning classic costume, and clothing his characters in the dress of their time.
Yet, as one critic has said, "men should be judged not absolutely, but relatively," and West, though not entirely free from the conventionalities of his time, had at least the courage to protest against some of the prevailing ideas and fashions in art.
