Born as Benjamin Williams in 1831, this Victorian landscape painter adopted the name Leader in 1857 to distinguish himself from the unrelated Williams family of painters.
Benjamin Williams Leader is best known for his idealised English landscapes and his talent for painting atmospheric views of the Scottish mountains and the tranquil surroundings of Betws-y-Coed, in North Wales.
Leader was a pupil at The Royal Academy, where he exhibited between 1857 and 1922 and where he was elected a full Royal Academician in 1898.

BENJAMIN WILLIAMS LEADER (1831-), English painter, the son of E. Leader Williams, an engineer, received his art education first at the Worcester School of Design and later in the schools of the Royal Academy.
He began to exhibit at the Academy in 1854, was elected A.R.A. in 1883 and R.A. in 1898, and became exceedingly popular as a painter of landscape.
One of his pictures, The Valley of the Llugwy," is in the National Gallery of British Art.
