While Benji's production values aren't everything they could be, and the acting is at best uneven, the movie is really held together by the immense charm of the unassuming mutt who plays the title character.
I bawled when little independent Benji was trying to communicate with the police that he knew where the kidnapped children were being held hostage.
Ive been a major fan of Benji when i was a child growing up in the 80's and i was so into this movie that it was the only movie i always wanted to watch.

If anything, Benji: Off the Leash feels like an extended public service announcement extolling the virtues of pet adoption and condemning the evils of puppy mills (oh yeah, and spousal abuse is bad too).
Both are cute and yes, everybody wants to play with them, but Benji: Off the Leash (he's never really on a leash in the first place) needs more than cute dogs to sustain itself.
There is the prerequisite sad scene at the end with the crying boy, but it feels so out of place given the tone of the rest of the film.

Benji's slavering devotion to categorical duty (he deliberately avoids being rescued until his furry charges are safe) ranks him among the great Kantian moralists of the screen, though the corresponding suppression of canine instinct should leave some Darwinian tongues hanging (and do we really want our yuppoid kiddies exposed to such masochistic example?).
Director Joe Camp, the inspirational hand behind the Benji series, shows some remarkable logistic skills in setting up his scenes, and the wilderness photography is never less than impressive, but there ought to be more to harmless entertainment than following wagging tails across the screen.
