Pal Benko My Life Games And Compositions
Benko and his family endured numerous difficult situations, and the detail of them is sobering for those of us who have not had to persevere in the face of such adversity.
While the Benko Gambit (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 b5) is perhaps his greatest contribution, others, such as the Benko System in the Sozin Attack (1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 Nc6 6.Bc4 Qb6) are still making their mark in current grandmaster play.
There is a chapter where Benko discusses his fairly sudden decision to marry, and there is also discussion of his resulting travel back and forth between the United States and Hungary (his wife stayed in Hungary, which was necessary to gain government approval for the marriage).

The Benko gambit is one of the most well respected gambits against d4.
Black's counterplay is very durable compared to many other gambits, in that the queenside pressure can last well into the endgame.
There are several plans however at White's disposal to combat this gambit, the most radical being to simply countergambit with b6 (after cxb6 a6 b6!?).

Benko has taught thousands of players both in person and through his columns.
His Chess Life column "Endgame lab" is one of the most popular columns in the magazine and in the world, and the Benko Gambit is one of the few distinct opening systems to be named after a modern player.

Benko's autobiography is lighthearted but historically rich (his story of his initial failed attempt to defect in West Berlin, and his subsequent arrest, interrogation and concentration camp experience are brilliant, yet harrowing literature), while Silman's interviews are playful and insightful.
Gently and tactfully, Silman uses the life of Benko to reveal how an American Grandmaster routinely faces undeserved disrespect from chess sponsors and chess fans alike--not because the sponsors and fans are stupid or mean, but because they lack the information and therefore the perspective to be seriously appreciative of the contributions of American grandmasters.
Benko includes a section on his development of the Benko Gambit (1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 c5 3 d5 b5).

The best is GrahamBurgess's 1995 book 'gambits', which does a good job of discussing motivations for gambits and types of compensation, but in my opinion the author uses the term 'gambit' too loosely and many of his examples are positional sacrifices and not what I would call gambits at all.
A few openings that are called 'gambits' are really non-gambits, the most obvious example being 1 d4 d5 2 c4 since even the Queen's Gambit Accepted (2...dxc4) is very rarely played with the intention of holding the pawn and White just regains his investment in the course of normal development.
Completely the opposite of the Benko, the gambiteer is seeking not a rational position with objective compensation but rather an extreme tactical melee in which human and computer opponents alike may lose their way.

Chessville - Reviews - The Benko Gambit Revealed - by Neil McDonald - Reviewed by Rick Kennedy
As elsewhere in The Benko Gambit Revealed, his comments not only touch on the development of Black’s game from the first move forward, but also on some of the line’s history, as the opening has developed over time.
A combination of explanation of strategy and presentation of annotated games, here is a deeper look (imagine a microscope focusing in) at what is going on – again with a sense of the development and maturation of the opening, as players with the White pieces have learned important lessons from their mistakes.
As a defense the Benko Gambit has weathered the test of time, and probably only needs a few more “heroes” or heroic performances to bring it back to the limelight – although, like the Sicilian Dragon, I suspect that in play below the master level, it has probably never been out of the limelight.

Martin describes the main themes and ideas of the Gambit and gives sound guide lines, so that any one who wants to play for the initiative with Black and play the Benko Gambit, will be very well equipped.

Regarding the Benko Gambit and the Benoni, arguably, they aren't the best of openings for Black and highly playable as White.
With 1.d4, White is probably prepared to play a Queen's Gambit, a Nimzo-Indian, a King's Indian or just about anything other than a Benko Gambit or a Benoni.
White should consider the possibility that Black is only pretending to enter the Benoni or Benko Gambit, in the hope that White will drop his Queen's Pawn opening in favor of a Sicilian that Black actually wants to play.
