Woollarawarre Bennelong, the Bush Politician (1789--92)
Bennelong feasted daily with the Governor and resided in his house where he shared a room and was watched by the Governor's steward.
This illustrates Bennelong's initiative and can be seen as an attempt to bring Phillip into his family kinship circle and also to reconcile Phillip as his 'beanga', or father, which he often used to call him.
Bennelong was long applauded as a success of both cultures because of his dynamic ability to blend into English high society or the traditional Aboriginal way of living, both very different settings.

Bennelong (married at the time to Barangaroo) was captured with Colbee (married to Daringa) in November 1789 as part of Governor of New South Wales Arthur Phillip's plan to learn the language and customs of the local people.
Bennelong is also known to have taught George Bass the language of the Sydney Aborigines, and, in a gesture of kinship, gave Phillip the Aboriginal name Wolawaree.
Although Bennelong appears to have had an ambivalent relationship with both the settlement and Governor Phillip, Bennelong and another Aborigine named Yemmerrawanie travelled with Phillip to England in 1792, and were presented to King George III on 24 May 1793.

BENNELONG is an epic tale set in the first years after the arrival of Europeans in Australia.
At its heart is the unique relationship between Governor Phillip and Bennelong, an Indigenous Australian captured by Phillip in an attempt to "civilize a fl" so he could become an ambassador between the two cultures, and the unusual relationship that developed between the two men.
This culminates in Bennelong's decision to accompany Phillip on his return to Britain, where their relationship is dramatically redefined, finally ending with Bennelong's return to his own land.

For example, their reaction in many parts of the electorate to the proposals put forward by a committee called the Barnett Committee earlier this year for the amalgamation of local councils was testimony to a desire to preserve a local identity.

After all it is possible that (as George Megalogenis suggested in his article on Tuesday) Howard will win the seat at the general election, lose the office of Prime Minister, resign his seat and, therefore, hand Bennelong to McKew at a by-election win.
Bennelong is a marginal seat gradually turning from safe to marginal by demographic change and successive redistributions moving it westwards into territory more favourable to Labor.
My reasoning is that Bennelong electors will kick Howard out at the October-November general election, thus preventing a by-election early in the New Year.
