Emory Lawrence Bennett, the smiling boy in the photos, the smiling soldier in the photos, at the age of 21, put aside the hopes of his youth, the thoughts of returning home to his beloved family, to his beloved Cocoa, and gave his life in that inhospitable, far-away place, so that his comrades might live.
Bennett unhesitantly left his foxhole, moved through withering fire, stood within full view of the enemy, and employed his automatic rifle, poured crippling fire into the ranks of the onrushing assailants, inflicting numerous casualties.
Bennett voluntarily remained to provide covering fire for the withdrawing elements, and, defying the enemy, continued to sweep the charging foe with devastating fire until mortally wounded.

Bennett Spring State Park, located in Dallas County near Lebanon, MO is home to the Ozarks’ 4th largest spring, a fish hatchery, and a unique natural tunnel.
Bennett was known for his generosity during the Civil War, as he gave hundreds of bushels of grain away to needy families during this time.

From Bennett Park continue north on Fort Washington Avenue, arriving in a few blocks at the south entrance to Fort Tryon Park.
In a short distance reach a stone structure on the left with parking on both sides of the road.
This area is probably naturally lower than Bennett Park, but the views are so outstanding and park is so lovely that I'd strongly recommend a visit.
