Bennie Maupin (born 8/29/1946) is a Detroit jazz multireedist.
He is probably best-known for his membership in Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi sextet and Headhunters band, and for performing on Miles Davis's seminal fusion record, Bitches Brew.
Maupin has collaborated with Horace Silver, Roy Haynes and many others.

Now, many moons later, "Saxophonist Bennie Maupin and Friends", will be featured at the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art's "Jazz at the Museum", a series of summer Jazz concerts at the Times Mirror Central Court.
Maupin, who lives in Altadena, studied at the Detroit Institute of Music while working part time and playing, with groups in Detroit.

ADD: Bennie Maupin and his trio have performed two jazz concerts at the Shannon Center, which is proud to present the world premiere of new music created under the auspices of the Chamber Music America 2001—02 New Works Creation and Presentation Program.
Maupin says the composed structures should make a “fitting contrast to short episodes of group and solo improvisations.
My intent is to combine the elements of composition and jazz improvisation into a deeply personal and engaging expression of modern 21st century chamber music.” The second half of the concert, “Inner Sky,” will feature the trio and quartet with the spoken word and modern dance improvisations.

Maupin started playing saxophone in high school, later adding flute and, most notably, the bass clarinet to his formidable arsenal of reed instruments.

Maupin played regularly with Roy Haynes (1966-1968) and Horace Silver (1968-1969), recording with McCoy Tyner (1968), Lee Morgan (1970), and Woody Shaw.

This double LP, which was trumpeter Lee Morgan's next-to-last recording, contains four lengthy side-long explorations by the trumpeter's regular quintet of the period (with Bennie Maupin on tenor, flute and bass clarinet, pianist Harold Mabern, bassist Jymie Merritt and drummer Mickey Roker).
The music is very modal-oriented and probably disappointed many of Morgan's longtime fans but he had gotten tired of playing the same hard bop-styled music that he had excelled at during the past decade and was searching for newer sounds.
Of particular interest is the tenor work of Bennie Maupin, who also plays a little flute and bass clarinet.

Working with electric bassist Paul Jackson, percussionist Bill Summers, and drummer Harvey Mason, along with woodwind player Bennie Maupin (the only holdover from Hancock’s Mwandishi band), Hancock managed to create an incredibly jazz/funk hybrid that most bona fide jazz musicians had been afraid to go after.
The core rhythm section of Summers, Clark, and Jackson are back, and the reunion is complete with the addition of special guests Harvey Mason and Bennie Maupin.
When Harvey Mason, an original member of the smooth band Forplay, returns with his composition “Headhunting,”; a track that also features Maupin and guitarist Wah Wah Watson, things begin to change up a bit, but by this time, you are definitely along for the whole ride.
