We hope this web site offers the residents of Bennington useful and pertinent information about various events (the "calendar"); transfer station hours; what can be recycled; town clerk services; assessor services; who the various board members are and even weather information.
Cotton Hill Road bridge (in the town of Attica, but servicing Bennington residents), is due to be replaced in mid-June with a Bailey bridge (used during WWII), which is a complete, pre-assembled bridge, replacing a structure condemned by the NYS Dept of Transportation.
This is new for us and we will be receiving guidance from the Perry Youth Director, who started the soccer program there.

During the American Revolution, Bennington was the nearest town to the site of a battle--actually fought on New York soil--in which American victory contributed to the ultimate defeat of "Gentleman Johnnie" Burgoyne at Saratoga.
It was in that second role that the squadron, including Bennington, departed New York on 19 November 1891 and visited West Indian and South American ports unti1 5 May 1892 when she transferred to the South Atlantic Squadron.
Bennington cruised South American waters until 19 July, when she set out from Bahia, Brazil, to visit Spanish and Italian ports during the quadricentennial celebration of Columbus' voyage to and discovery of the western hemisphere.

Although the British were forced out of Boston in March, the newly-formed Continental Army under Gen. George Washington lost the port of New York in the fall, barely escaping total defeat.
What seemed like a small defeat here at the Battle of Bennington in New York near the border between New York and the new Republic of Vermont cost Burgoyne 10 percent of his army and critical time.
In October, the British campaign ended in humiliating defeat at Saratoga in New York, when Burgoyne was forced to surrender his entire army.
