  USS Bennington (CV-20) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On 7 April Bennington's planes participated in the attacks on the Japanese task force moving through the East China Sea toward Okinawa which resulted in the sinking of the Japanese battleship Yamato, light cruiser Yahagi, and four destroyers.
Bennington arrived at San Francisco 7 November 1945 and early in March 1946 transited the Panama Canal en route to Norfolk, Virginia.
Bennington was decommissioned 15 January 1970, stricken 20 September 1989, and sold for scrap 12 January 1994, being subsequently towed across the Pacific for scrapping in India.

Admiral Ozawa's own flag log for 20 June 1944 showed his surviving carrier air power as only 35 operational aircraft out of the 430 planes with which he had commenced the Battle of the Philippine Sea.

The constant grind of combat, the appalling living conditions and a host of exotic tropical maladies quickly sapped the strength of the squadrons on the island, but the Americans were determined to hold Guadalcanal.
During its second combat tour beginning in December 1944, the squadron was assigned as a component of the Air Group 82 aboard U.S.S. Bennington (CV-20).
Bennington, U.S.S. Hornet (CV-12), U.S.S. Wasp (CV-18) and U.S.S. Belleau Wood (CVL-24) made up Task Group 1 of Task Force 58 [T.G.-58.1], and there were an even dozen additional carriers among the other four task groups of the Fast Carrier Force, Task Force 58.

 CV-9 ESSEX Class - Navy Ships
On 04 June 1947 the CNO approved Project 27A by which Essex-class carriers were modernized to be able to handle aircraft to 40,000 pounds and included the installation of two H-8 catapults, strengthening the flight deck and clearing it of guns, increasing elevator capacity and adding special provisions for jet aircraft such as blast deflectors.
USS Oriskany (CV 34), the first of nine carriers modernized under this project, began conversion at the New York Naval Shipyard on 01 October 1947.
USS Essex (CV 9) was recommissioned 16 January 1951, and on 23 August 1951 she went into combat in Korea, the first carrier to launch F2H Banshee twinjet fighters on combat missions.

The ship was laid down as Hancock on 1 Feb. 1943 at Newport News, Va., by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., and renamed Ticonderoga on 1 May 1943.
The ship was laid down on 15 Mar. 1943 by the Philadelphia Navy Yard and launched on 20 August.

Comments: While the Bennington never served in the Korean war zone I guess we were considered Korean Veterans since we went where we were sent.I would be interested in hearing from members of the V-2 Division that served between 1952 and 1954
As history has shown the Bennington was a jinxed vessel, typhoon damge in the Pacific, boiler explosion at Gitmo Bay, Cuba, damage again in the North Atlantic in heavy seas, and I mean heavy, water over the flight deck, and then catupult fluid explosion off Rhode Island killing many good boys, which I narrowly missed.

June was spent in Leyte for repairs and upkeep and then in July, the LIND was underway with Task Group 38 for strikes against Tokyo-area targets.
She rescued pilots from the carriers SHANGRI LA (CV-38) and BENNINGTON (CV-20) and conducted a night sweep into the mouth of Tokyo Bay.
On 20 February, she, the OZBOURN (DD-846), and CHARLES S. SPERRY (DD-697) braved enemy fire from shore during the successful rescue of a pilot who had crash landed in Wonsan Harbor.

I got it from Lowell Love, a CV 20 Photographer's mate.
On the back of the picture is written "The first aircraft to land on Bennington." I wasn't quite sure whether that was really accurate or not, but................................

I show that there was no Kamikaze attack on the Benny during February in any of the historical data I have on the ship.
From this it seems that the first plane shot down by the Bennington was in the month of March 1945, thus eliminating any possible February date for the picture.
That was one of the most publicized pictures of the Bennington during WWII.

 USS San Juan CL54 - History
ENTERPRISE (CV-6) was hit in the battle, and SAN JUAN, which had damaged a gun mount off Guadalcanal, escorted the carrier to Pearl Harbor, arriving on 10 September 1942.
After replenishing at Ulithi, SAN JUAN escorted carrier HORNET in air strikes on Tokyo during the Iwo Jima operation in February and then returned to Ulithi on 1 March to prepare for the Okinawa invasion.
She was at sea when the news of the Japanese capitulation was received on 15 August, and, on the 27th, after 59 days at sea, she joined the van forces for the triumphal entry of the 3d Fleet into Sagami Wan, just outside Tokyo Bay.

Dad served on the good ship from her maiden voyage until discharge from war duites in 1946.
When dad was discharged from duty (April, 1946), he was given a book which is believed to have been published by the ships printers; Our public library knows of only two copies or three copies in the country.
During the period 25 & 26 February, Dad's book descibes the Bennington "ganging up" with the entire task force off the coast of Tokyo, but the weather over the target was poor & attacks were cancelled.

Some statistics on Enterprise B, C, and D had to be taken from drawings in the Encyclopedia, so other than length, my numbers may be suspect on these ships.
The "Star Fleet Technical Manual" by Franz Joseph was mostly well researched, (there are some errors) and was once considered nearly canon, but it has been contradicted many times since its publication over 20 years ago.
