Benny Goodman, born Benjamin David Goodman, (May 30, 1909 - June 13, 1986) was a famous Jazz musician who was, and still is, known as "King of Swing," "Patriarch of the Clarinet," and "Swing's Senior Statesman".
Goodman was born in Chicago, Illinois the son of poor Jewish immigrants that lived on Chicago's Maxwell Street neighborhood.
It should be noted, however, that Goodman himself was no mere imitator; he was an astonishly virtuosic and creative clarinetist, and one of the most of innovative jazz musicians of the pre-Bebop era.

Benny Goodman received rudimentary musical training in 1919 at the Kehelah Jacob Synagogue and the next year joined the boys club band at Jane Addams's Hull House, where he received lessons from the director James Sylvester.
Goodman's solo on After You've Gone from that session is an example of his mature style — his flawless playing utilizes almost the complete range of the instrument, and his disciplined explorations of the harmony and fondness for the blue thirds reveals the technical mastery and controlled expression that formed the essence of his art.
The original Benny Goodman Trio was reunited for a benefit recording for Fletcher Henderson (1951) and a television appearance on NBC (1953), and also appeared in a film based on Goodman's life, The Benny Goodman Story (1956).

Hailed as the ''King of Swing,'' Benny Goodman was one of the early innovators of that genre and the first of its bandleaders to emerge as a national icon.
Goodman, however, caught the ear of a radio producer, who hired him for a new program, a weekly three-hour dance band marathon featuring two other orchestras, those of Xavier Cugat and Kel Murray.
Goodman tried to continue leading the orchestra but in July of 1940 was forced to take a leave of absence while he underwent treatment.

The Benny Goodman Orchestra had a shaky begining due to personnel problems, but by the time its first tour reached California in August of 1935 the band had become immensely popular.
Skilled musicians such as Lionel Hampton and Charlie Christian featured in many of Goodman's smaller ensembles; his popularity was such that he could remain financially viable without touring the South, where he would have been suject to arrest for violating the Jim Crow laws.
Goodman himself remained active in music until his death, becoming more involved in the classical genre in the later part of his career.

Goodman’s first recordings were made with the Pollack group in 1926, and give a strong example of Benny’s influences at the time including Jimmie Noone, who was then with Doc Cook and His Dreamland Orchestra and Leon Roppolo of the New Orleans Rhythm Kings.
During this period Goodman recorded his first sides as a leader with members of the Pollack band including one 1928 date which features the only known recording of Benny on alto and baritone saxophones.
Many musicians claimed that Benny was dishonest when it came time to pay off the band and many more recalled the Goodman “ray”, the dirtiest of looks received when a mistake was made.

After resigning in 1929, Goodman worked with Red Nichols, as a studio musician, and then leading his own band at Bill Rose Music Hall (where he had a weekly NBC broadcast).
Over the next five years (during which there were several riots at Goodman performances) in Chicago and New York, Goodman built a team which included trumpeter Harry James, drummer Gene Krupa, and fl musicians Teddy Wilson and Lionel Hampton, and eventually electric guitarist Charlie Christian.
Goodman made a 1962 tour of Russia for the US State Department, appeared in two feature films A Song is Born (1947) and The Benny Goodman Story (1955), toured Europe through the '70s, and even returned to Carnegie Hall for a 40-year anniversary of his original performance.

He ended up playing in several of Red Nichols Broadway pit orchestras and playing in commercial dance bands of little Jazz interest until 1934 when record producer John Hammond recruited Krupa for Benny Goodman's Orchestra that featured the arrangements of Fletcher Henderson.
His drum part on Goodman's 1936 hit "Sing, Sing, Sing" was the classic drum anthem of the Swing Era, and his matinee idol appearance on stage and appearances in films made him one of the biggest musical stars of the era.
In 1938 he left Goodman's group and formed the Gene Krupa Orchestra which featured trumpeter Roy Eldrige and singer Anita O'Day.

Goodman fans worldwide know who Art Lund, (or Art London) was.
In 1999 Sony-Columbia released the excellent 2- CD set of the Benny Goodman-Peggy Lee recordings, and this Art Lund CD actually 'fills the gap' because alot of these tunes are the 'flip-sides' of those original 78rpm records.
Benny's contract with Columbia Records expired later that year and Art left the band to pursue a solo career.

While every volume in the series has one, Goodman and his bands were used by Hollywood more than most bands from the late 1930s and early '40s, and the stuff on here is prime, as well as the footage of later performances in the mid- '60s.
Sure, the CD has good sound and the hits are all here, but the DVD has performances dating from the classic Victor era quartet as well as the orchestra.
There is also an interview wit Goodman in audio-only to wind up the set, but in all it totals a fine collection -- one that fans need -- and serves as an amazing historical introduction to the great bandleader.
