Benoni books do not bother with it either, for White need not play c2-c4 and if the e-file is opened (which often happens) the central pawn structure is quite different.
Black cannot hope for a Benoni type counterplay, for White puts a piece and not a pawn on c4." However, he gave no concrete examples to support this argument and 3 d5 gives a kind of middle game that may be unwelcome to many 1 e4 players.
In fact it is a form of Old Benoni (also reachable 1 d4 c5 2 d5 e6 3 e4) and is considered briefly under the heading A43 in ECO (the "Encyclopaedia of Chess Openings").

Benoni Defense - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Benoni Defense is a group of chess openings generally characterized by the opening moves 1.d4 c5 2.d5 although Black's...c5 and White's answer d5, is often delayed until move 2 or 3.
The most common is the Modern Benoni, which may come after the moves 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 e6 4.Nc3 d6 5.e4 exd5 6.cxd5 g6 or 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 e6 4.Nc3 exd5 5.cxd5 d6 6.e4 g6.
The Modern Benoni is thus a very combative and double-edged opening, indeed, it is one of the most double-edged openings with 1.d4.

This hypermodern Defense was successfully played by Alekhine against A. Steiner in 1921 at Budapest but this Defense was well known for more than a 100 years before that.
This Defense blocks the c pawn and often trades a bishop for a knight but allows Black to develop quickly which may bring him attacking chances against inferior play.
This Defense was analyzed in the 15th century by Italian Lucena, but was named after Parisian players who adopted it in an 1834 correspondence game against London.

 Chess openings: Benoni Defense (A56)
If fl actually wants to avoid the Taimanov, he either can't play the Benoni against 3.Nc3, or has to play something like the Hromadka System, or has to play an early a6 or Nd7 or Bd7 (all of which don't seem to work so well and just invite a difficult position).
You see a lot of players covering the nimzo and the benoni to fill their reportoire but why not play this order of benoni only,or play the nimzo and QID or bogo which are much more consistent with the nimzo?
The main point is that if fl wants a Benoni but not the Taimanov, he can go with the Hromadka System, unless that is as flawed as euripides read it is.

The Gambit Guide to the Modern Benoni
Watson has often stated his preference for the latter type of work, and for the Modern Benoni, the book's exhaustive analysis appears to be the more appropriate method.
The Modern Benoni is an unbalancing, fighting defense that has appealed to no-holds-barred players.
A player who already plays the Benoni is likely to find at least a few variations where favored lines are not covered at all.

Nowadays, the Modern Benoni defense is a rare bird.
The Benoni is characterized by the moves 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.6 e6 4.Nc3 exd5 5.cxd5.
The theme of the Benoni is that fl must stop white from expanding with an eventual e5, while white must stop fl's queen side majority from advancing.

His work covers from the simple piece's moves, pieces' name to advance topic like: the positional chess, strategies and the debatable "Who is the greatest chess player of all times?" This reminds me of many books of Chernev's, except Keene's is all about real chess, while Chernev's has quite a few fictonal stories.
Some sections in Keene's are very good: in the Indian Defenses, the attacking methods/targets, choosing a chess hereos, fighting against/for the IP, so on.
Neither the Benoni Defense nor the Maroczy Sicilian is mentioned anywhere else, as far as could see.

3.Nf3, transposing into a normal Sicilian Defense, and 3.c3, transposing into a line of the Alapin Sicilian (usually arrived at after 1.e4 c5 2.c3 e6 3.d4) are also common.
Play may also transpose into French Defense lines; for example, 1.e4 e6 2.d4 c5 3.c3 d5 4.e5 transposes into the Advance Variation of the French.
