Topic: Benson Hedges Masters

The Global Snooker Centre   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Outside of the world championship, the Benson and Hedges is the longest running tournament on the circuit and even though it does not have ranking status, it is considered to be one of the most prestigious, especially as it carries the second biggest prize.
The 20 year-old Scot was appearing in his first Masters and he went on to win it - and remained unbeaten in the event for the next five years until fellow Scot, Alan McManus beat him in the 1994 final.
The banning of tobacco sponsorship meant that the 2003 event, won by Mark Williams, was the last under the Benson and Hedges banner but it is unthinkable that such a high profile event will be allowed to die.

The Masters, formerly the Benson and Hedges Masters is a professional snooker tournament.
Although not a ranking event, it is regarded as one of the most prestigious tournaments on the circuit, earning more prize money than any other tournament except the World Championship.
The event was sponsored by Benson and Hedges until 2003, but UK restrictions on tobacco advertising meant that it was without a sponsor the following year.

PAUL Hunter has successfully defended his Benson and Hedges Masters title in terrific style as he came back from 5-0 behind to defeat the world number one Mark J. Williams 10-9 and pocket the first prize of around $265,000.
In the seventeenth frame Williams was trapped in an awkward snooker with four reds left — he hit the pink and Hunter capitalized with a decisive run of 32, clinching the frame with a superb pot on the yellow along the baulk cushion.
Though now having won the Regal Welsh and the Masters in succession, a nine-match winning streak, he has proved that he has now matured as a player and will be in contention for each event he competes in.
