Benson and Hedges was founded in 1873 by Richard Benson and William Hedges as Benson and Hedges Ltd. The company was formed to make cigarettes for the then Prince of Wales, Albert Edward.
Benson and Hedges Ltd in the UK was acquired by Gallaher Limited in 1955 (now the Gallaher Group).
Throughout the 1980s Benson and Hedges was the major sponsor of international cricket in Australia, holding the naming rights for most of the one day international tournaments such as the World Series Cup and the World Championship of Cricket.

In that season Lara set the world record for a first-class cricket score of 501 whilst playing for Warwickshire against Durham County Cricket Club; the team total of 810-4 declared in that match is also a club record.
However they have since been promoted in both competitions (though relegated again in the National Cricket League), won the Benson and Hedges Cup in 2002 and strong performances with the bat saw the county reclaim the County Championship in 2004.

Storey said the ISL was looking at plans for a replacement tournament, but admitted that it was looked unlikely that a substitute for the Benson and Hedges Cup would be organised this year.

The Competition started in 1972, Twenty teams were organised into four zonal groups; the (then) seventeen first-class counties were joined by three other teams, Minor Counties (North), Minor Counties (South) and Cambridge University (who were to alternate annually with Oxford University).

Manchester Storm have finally put the semi final disappointments of the past two seasons behind them by reaching the Benson and Hedges Cup final for the first time in the club’s history - the first time they have reached any major final.
Eleven minutes later and the Storm were still one up going into the final minute and it looked like they were going to win the BandH on their first visit to the final when London pulling their netminder Cavallin paid off and they scored the equaliser with just 46 seconds left on the clock.
The London fans celebrated as if they had won the cup and the Storm fans (me included) were suitably devastated.
