At Bents Old Fort National Historic Site, the National Park Service proposes to construct a new administrative office building separate from the reconstructed fort, provide additional staff parking at the maintenance area and realign the maintenance area access road, and rehabilitate the existing interpretive space in the reconstructed fort.
Alternative B is the National Park Service’s proposed action alternative and presents a site plan and building design for the administration building, plus a rehabilitation plan for the fort.
This action is needed to address issues of potential exposure to hantavirus, create administrative space separate from the reconstructed fort, and to provide upgraded visitor interpretive and educational services and opportunities.

Bent's Old Fort was built in 1833 by Charles and William Bent and Ceran St. Vrain, specifically to take advantage of its location on the north bank of the Arkansas River, on the Mountain Branch of the Santa Fe Trail.
So effective were the Bents as peacemakers among the Indians, that in 1846 the fort was used as headquarters for the Upper Platte and Arkansas Indian Agency.
The Bents' reputation made their traders welcome in most Indian villages and drew growing numbers of Indians to the fort.

 National Park Service - Soldier and Brave (Bent's Old Fort)
Bent's Old Fort, on the north bank of the Arkansas River in southeastern Colorado, was one of the most significant outposts on the Santa Fe Trail and as the principal outpost of American civilization on the southwestern Plains was instrumental in shaping national destiny there.
Early in the 1950's the State Historical Society of Colorado acquired Bent's Old Fort from the Colorado chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Among the earliest western fur traders were the brothers William and Charles Bent and Ceran St. Vrain, all of whom in the 1820's began to engage in the Mexican and Indian trade.

Silas Bent reported from St. Louis in 1812 that murder was openly committed in the streets of St. Louis and that the murderers went at large.
Its site has long since been consumed by the Missouri River but was directly south of the present day town of Marthasville, Warren County, Missouri, and about two miles east of the Schakes of La Charette farm.
Twenty year old Walter Helman, a laborer living with the SCHAKES OF LA CHARETTE, was of this heritage as documented by the 1880 Charette Township census.
