Dashur, Cradle of the Pyramids -- The Bent Pyramid of Snofru
This pyramid, with a base length of 53 metres and a height of 32.5 metres, was probably an adaptation of the concept of the South Tomb found in the complex of Netjerikhet at Saqqara.
Eventhough this pyramid was finally completed, including additional constructions such as the satellite pyramid and the Mortuary Temple, Snofru was buried in his third pyramid: the Red Pyramid, built a couple of kilometres North of the Bent Pyramid.

The Bent pyramid is a fascinating structure which raises as many questions as it answers about the evolution of the pyramid.
Although parts of the casing are crumbling away, this pyramid gives the best idea of the sparkling brilliance that the pyramids of Egypt had before their casings were stripped away.
In front of the pyramid at the center of its east side lies the remains of the Mortuary temple of Sneferu.

 Bent Pyramid
The builder of the Bent Pyramid is thought to have been the Pharaoh Snefru (2680-2565 BC), who was the first ruler of the 4th Dynasty.
Although various theories have been proposed to explain the curious change in angle which gives the Bent Pyramid its name, the most convincing reason for its shape was the necessity to remedy the cracks and fissures caused by subsidence which began to appear even while this pyramid was being built.
The upper half of the pyramid was completed at an angle of 43 degrees to a height of 105 m (344 ft) with smaller stones laid in horizontal rather than inwardly sloping courses to diminish the weight of the mass.

Owing to the destruction of the outer casing around the base of the Bent Pyramid, the lines of the sides must be found in some places by projecting the slope of the casing still remaining higher up the side, down to base-level.
In endeavouring to describe the proportions of the Bent Pyramid as accurately as possible, I took account of the numerous measurements of the casing-angle taken by Petrie, which show a marked convexity in the faces of the pyramid in both the lower and upper sections.
No points were observed by him on the upper part of the pyramid on any side, and the base-edge of this part was instead calculated by assuming that the steeper casing-angle which was used generally near the base of the pyramid, could be applied uniformly on each side.

Like most Egyptian pyramids, the Bent Pyramid has an entrance on its north face, but if you look closely at this photo of the west side, you'll see a fl square half-way up and to the right of center, which is another entrance.
The Red Pyramid (sometimes also called the North Pyramid) was built by Sneferu straight after the Bent Pyramid, and is visible on the left of this photo.
The casings of the other pyramids were largely pilfered by later generations who took the materials to build their own temples, churches and mosques.

The Geometry of the Bent Pyramid   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Irregularities in the form of the Bent Pyramid, which Dorner attributes to settlements in the core-masonry, are found to reflect the complexities encountered by the builders in the fulfilment of an exceptionally ambitious project.
It is generally assumed that the unique double-sloping profile of the Bent Pyramid was brought about during the construction when the builders, noticing a settlement in the masonry, decided to reduce the pyramid's eventual volume by lessening the external casing-angle.
Soon after the construction of the Bent Pyramid, the measure of 280 cubits was used for the height of the Great Pyramid, which was divided into parts of 82 and 198 or 2 x 99 cubits at the level of the 'King's Chamber'.

You can't approach the Black Pyramid because it's still in a restricted military zone, so this photo was taken with a long lens from the Bent Pyramid, described later.
Thieves were breaking into burial chambers even from the earliest days, so the passageways inside the pyramids were deliberately made to be difficult to follow, with deep pits for unwary grave robbers to fall into and stone blocks called portcullises which were lowered from the ceiling to block the path.
As you can see, much of the outer limestone covering is still intact, and yet this pyramid is older than the Black Pyramid, the Red Pyramid, or any of the pyramids at Giza, all of which have lost most of their outer layers to the ravages of time and pilfering by later generations of builders.

Inside, the Bent Pyramid is the only one to have 2 different entrances leading to 2 different and (initially) separate chambers.
It is the first instance of a non-step pyramid (the Meydum pyramid was converted from a step pyramid right at the end of Snefru’s reign), and it clearly show the problems builders faced when constructing such an edifice.

The lesson of the Bent Pyramid also encouraged them to construct the pyramid with stones laid in level, rather than inclined, courses at the similarly modest angle of 43 degrees to a not insubstantial height of 104 m (341 ft), making it the fourth highest pyramid ever built.
To complete such a pyramid in 17 years is an even more impressive feat when one considers that at the same time Snefru was hedging his bets by filling in the steps of the pyramid at Meidum, transforming it too into a geometric pyramid, a shape for which he and his architects deserve full credit.
