Since 1934 it has been bred in the northern German Emsland area, especially in the county of Bentheim.
The highly endangered, frugal Bentheimer Landschaf is used for landscape preservation.
It is the largest of the German heath- and- moor sheep with long legs and hard hoofs.

Heath sheep, small and short-tailed sheep, descending from the European Mufflon, still show an unpretending landrace character.
In this group the small Drenthe Heath Sheep is the origin of the Bentheimer and, together with a local sheep, of the Schoonebeker.
The Veluwse Heath has the wool characteristics of Drenthe (long cover-hair and fine under-wool).
