icBirmingham - West Midlands 'healthy'   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The West Midlands economy emerges looking distinctly healthier than that in Britain as a whole in a survey described as "disturbing", though not "alarming", by David Frost, director general of the British Chambers of Commerce.
West Midlands manufacturers expecting their profitability to improve in the coming months outnumbered those bracing themselves for a decline by 43 per cent of the sample, up from 28 per cent three months ago.
In services, a balance of 64 per cent of West Midlands manufacturers described themselves as confident in terms of turnover, up from 55 per cent, though the 49 per cent who said the same about profits was one percentage point lower.

IDEASFACTORY West Midlands - Business Feature
But there is a real feeling of hope in the future of the Midlands ad world and the signs are there that it is fighting its way back to health.
"Midlands companies are not wholly motivated by delivering a market brief; instead they are able to provide cross-platform solutions." These solutions play to the strengths of companies who have in the past been jack-of-all-trades by necessity.
But there are plenty of companies in the rest of the country and beyond that look to work with Midlands companies for their skilful approaches to campaigns at cheaper prices.

icBirmingham - West Midlands firms' moderate growth   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Growth amongst West Midlands firms remains hesitant as many continued to battle strong competition and higher input costs, a report has claimed.
West Midlands firms continued to face sharper increases in input prices on average than those across the UK as a whole in February.
RBS Economist Mark Smyth said: "Private-sector firms in the West Midlands saw a further expansion in output and new orders in February, but the rate of growth remains relatively moderate and below the UK average."

 William Harrison Ainsworth (1805-1882)
Perhaps best remembered for his popularisation of the story of Dick Turpin in Rookwood (1834) and of Herne the Hunter in Windsor Castle (1843), and for his prodigious output of historical and romantic novels, Ainsworth combined his writing career with that of magazine owner and editor.
In 1839 he moved into the world of magazines, taking on the editorship of Bentley's Miscellany for a couple of years (succeeding Dickens in the post), founding his own Ainsworth's Magazine (1842-54), and also editing the New Monthly Magazine.
In 1854, he terminated Ainsworth's Magazine but bought Bentley's Miscellany in the same year, and continued as editor of this and the New Monthly Magazine until he sold the former in 1868.
