  Benton County History
Benton County was established by the Provisional Legislature in 1847.
Carved from Polk County, Benton County stretched from the Polk County boundary south to the California border and from the Pacific Ocean east to the Willamette River.
Today Benton County occupies 679 square miles of the central Willamette Valley and is bordered on the east by the Willamette River and Linn County, on the west by the summit of the Coast Range and Lincoln County, on the north by Polk County, and on the south by Lane County.

In 1845 Hickory County was formed, taking from Benton County all of its territory south of the north line of Township 36, and the same year the twenty-four miles square (sic) of the northwest part of the county was given to Pettis County.
Benton County was settled mainly by emigrants from Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee.

Upon the famous Missouri Compromise of 1820, admitting Missouri to the Union as a state, Benton was elected the first U.S. Senator.
Benton was famous for his efforts to establish a liberal system of land distribution that would discourage speculators but enable honest settlers to purchase public lands at low prices.
Benton died in Washington D.C. on April 10, 1858 at the age of 76.

Benton County was established in 1835 from Pettis and St. Clair Counties.
Benton Co. people in Dickson Co. met at the house of the father to bid them goodby, the group including 13 children and nine grandchildren and Sam KINKEAD and family, and there was a feast of provisions and everyone able for the table duty.
The subject of this sketch was born near Warsaw, Benton Co., MO March 19, 1862 and went to sleep in Jesus May 19, 1918 being fifty-six years and two months old.

 Thomas H. Caldwell of Callaway County Missouri
Thomas Caldwell, the father, was born in Paris, Bourbon county, Kentucky, on the 20th of June, 1792, and was reared in the famous Blue Grass Region of that State.
Coming to Missouri in 1826, he immediately settled in Callaway county, locating in what was then a part of Round Prairie township where he bought and entered large bodies of land, aggregating in all nearly 1,000 acres.
John G. Bratton, of Washington county, Arkansas; Thomas H., the subject of this sketch; John B., of this county, and Newton G., carrying on the pottery at Caldwell, established by his father in 1826.

 UED6007 Missouri Courthouses: Benton County, MU Extension
After Benton County organized in 1835, legislators appointed three commissioners to select the county seat.
However, the commissioners failed to act, and in January 1837 three new commissioners were instructed to locate the county seat at a site as near the center of the county and the Osage River as could be found.
In June 1841, after the building served as courthouse for three years, commissioners authorized the sale of the lot where the temporary courthouse stood, providing the lot not be sold for less than $800.

 Warsaw, Missouri City Government!
At the center of the town square is the Benton County Courthouse, home to the county offices and courtroom.
The Benton County jail was originally built in 1856 as a branch of the Merchant Bank of St. Louis.
The bank closed during the Civil War and in 1912 the building was purchased by Benton County Court and converted into a jail and used as such since that time.

In 1857 the parents removed to Callaway County, where they lived until their deaths, and where Dr. Sneathen continued the practice of medicine, and also carried on a farm.
Noah F. Sneathen, their eldest living son, was born in Montgomery County, Missouri, on the 17th of April, 1843, and was reared on his father's farm in that county.
On the 27th of July, 1865, he was married to Miss Lizzie Neas, of Benton County, Missouri, born June 26, 1845, and a daughter of Samuel and Margaret Neas, of that county, both now deceased, her mother dying September 3, 1878, and her father January 1, 1883.

 Civil War, Benton County Missouri Home Guards, aka German Regiment
The U. Government designation of this 90-day Union unit was "Benton County Home Guards, Missouri Volunteers." However, their original discharge certificates, not distributed until 1864-65, read: "German Regiment, Missouri Volunteers" and 95% were either German-born or descendants.
When federal pensions were authorized in 1890, surviving veterans or their widows were eligible, and the pension files often provide genealogical data.
Shown also are John Schlüsing's discharge certificate from the "German Regiment" and the replacement certificate for Peter Ficken that was provided to his widow by the Missouri State Adjutant General in 1893.

I have traced the movement of many of these early family members to other parts of Missouri, to California, Montana, and Kansas, My own family (maybe we should get out more?) continue to live within miles of, and on some of the original family homestead in Benton County.
