Benton County was established by the Provisional Legislature in 1847.
Carved from Polk County, Benton County stretched from the Polk County boundary south to the California border and from the Pacific Ocean east to the Willamette River.
Today Benton County occupies 679 square miles of the central Willamette Valley and is bordered on the east by the Willamette River and Linn County, on the west by the summit of the Coast Range and Lincoln County, on the north by Polk County, and on the south by Lane County.

It is one of seven counties in the United States to be named after Senator Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri, a longtime advocate of the development of the Oregon Territory.
The county was created out of an area originally inhabited by the Klickitat Indians, who rented it from the Calapooia Indians for use as hunting grounds.
Later, portions of Benton County were taken to form Coos, Curry, Douglas, Jackson, Josephine, Lane and Lincoln Counties, leaving it in its present form with 679 square miles of land area.

The amount of forest in the county has always been small, and was further reduced by the clearing of many woodlots and streamside vegetation.
Because of these land-use practices, the typical birds for Benton County are grassland specialists and open-country birds such as Grasshopper Sparrows and Horned Larks, rather than the familiar woodland birds such as chickadees and woodpeckers.
The portion of the refuge south of County Road 200 North is closed to all (including hunters) during waterfowl seasons to provide a protected resting area for ducks and geese.
