Benue State lies between longitude 7O 47'E and 10OE and latitudes 6O25'N and 8O 8'N. The State has boundaries with Enugu, Kogi, Nasarrawa, Taraba, Ebonyi, Anambra, Cross River, and the Camerouns.
Benue State is highly reputed for being the largest producers of food stuff in Nigeria, hence the State slogan “The food basket of the Nation.” The loamy soil and conducive weather conditions are responsible for the rich agricultural output of the State.
Benue State is one of the homogenous ethnic compositions in Nigeria, notably occupies by the Tivs, the Idomas and the Igedes.

The Benue people and the Tiv in particular are yet to recover from the barbaric and criminal military invasion the Aso Rock tyrant ordered against them in 2001 and which resulted in the massacre of innocent civilians, not to mention the scorched earth destruction of entire villages and communities.

Governor Akume of Benue state seems to be enjoying the covert support for his actions as indicated by the inaction of president Obasanjo in the matter.
Lest this crisis engulfs the whole of Tiv land (which is the largest part of Benue state by population and land mass), bringing with it the outrageous images of the 1960 and 1964/65, the Federal government should without further delay get actively involved.

During its December 2001 visit to Benue, and a brief visit to Wukari, in Taraba State, Human Rights Watch was informed about an alarming increase in violence between Tivs and Jukuns in Taraba in the weeks preceding the military operation in Benue.
The conflict in the Taraba-Benue area, which has been going on for decades, is principally between the Tivs, on the one hand, and the Jukuns, on the other; in recent years, the Jukuns have formed a close alliance with the Fulanis.
Benue is often referred to as the Tiv state, and Taraba as that of the Jukuns.

LAGOS—THE Benue State Government has dragged the Federal Government and the 35 state governments of the Federation before the Supreme Court over the Economic and Financial Crimes (EFCC) Act 2004, contending that the National Assembly cannot validly pass any Act to create another police force or security agency.
It says the creation of the EFCC vested with awesome and wide powers like those given to the police by the 1999 constitution and the Police Act contravenes the clear provision of the 1999 constitution is unconstitutional, null and void.
Benue State is contesting that “contrary to the clear provision of the constitution, EFCC set up by the National Assembly and its operation, particularly in relation to the Benue State government, is another (Police) force in a disguise manner and with wide and/or overriding powers than the Nigerian Police.”

A senior government official said at least seven people had died from cholera in Makurdi over the past two weeks but local residents said the true death toll appeared to be nearer 100.
Benue State Governor George Akuma visited the worst-hit Wadata district of the city on Monday and declared free treatment for hundreds of people in hospital because of the epidemic.
Mike Iduma, Benue state commissioner for health, said the authorities had so far confirmed only seven deaths from cholera, but he acknowledged that many more deaths from the epidemic may not have been officially reported.

The attacks in Benue and Taraba States were apparently in reprisal for the killing of 19 soldiers, whose mutilated bodies were found on 12 October 2001 near to villages in Benue state including Gbeji, Vaase, Anyiin and Zaki-Biam.
The Jukuns, however, are the majority in Taraba, which lies to the east of Benue, near the border with Cameroon.
And as if to confirm their fears Benue State officials report that the special forces deployed in the area last week confronted a contingent of soldiers that came over from Taraba to burn villages in Ukum.

Obasanjo was in the Benue capital, Makurdi, to attend a reconciliation forum organised by the Benue branch of the Christian Association of Nigeria.
The president had sent soldiers after local militiamen who killed 19 soldiers sent to quell violent clashes between Tivs and their Jukun neighbours on the border between Benue and Taraba states.
The soldiers carried out reprisal attacks against several Tiv villages located in the area where the soldiers were killed, killing at least 200 people and leaving tens of thousands homeless.

FRESH communal crisis has broken out in Otukpo Local Council area of Benue State, with over 100 houses burnt by the combatants.
An eyewitness told The Guardian that the crisis, which erupted at Otukpo Icho, a few kilometres from Otukpo town, the seat of Odi Idoma, at the weekend, was a fallout of disagreements between two factions in the village.

 "Soldiers" Leave Death In Thier Wake - 27-10-01
tension rose to unprecedented heights in Benue state, in Nigeria's middle belt area when people believed to be soldiers invaded four Benue villages - Vaase, Gbesir, Anyiim, Iorja a few days ago.
The are believed to have been carrying out a reprisal attack on the Tiv people for the murder of twenty soldiers who were killed and their bodies mutilated by Tiv militia men about a fortnight ago.
The soldiers had been abducted on October 11, in a Tiv suburb while their mutilated bodies were found few days later at a primary school in Zakbiya area of Benue state.
