During its December 2001 visit to Benue, and a brief visit to Wukari, in Taraba State, Human Rights Watch was informed about an alarming increase in violence between Tivs and Jukuns in Taraba in the weeks preceding the military operation in Benue.
Benue is often referred to as the Tiv state, and Taraba as that of the Jukuns.
More than six months later, many of the Tiv who were displaced from Nasarawa are still living in Benue State, in camps with little or no facilities, and a persisting fear of returning to their homes because of the continuing insecurity there.

 News: Nigeria, Nigeria: Cholera outbreak kills up to 100 in Benue State
Benue State Governor George Akuma visited the worst-hit Wadata district of the city on Monday and declared free treatment for hundreds of people in hospital because of the epidemic.
Mike Iduma, Benue state commissioner for health, said the authorities had so far confirmed only seven deaths from cholera, but he acknowledged that many more deaths from the epidemic may not have been officially reported.
In February, at least 46 people died of cholera in Kusa, a village in Oyo state in southwestern Nigeria, which is mainly populated by quarry workers and self-employed gold miners.

The state is known to be an endemic zone for both animal and human trypanosomiases (1,2).
Goboko Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State, which is to the north of Konshisha LGA, was hyper-enzootic for animal trypanosomiasis with a ruminant infection rate of 33.2% (2).

The attacks in Benue and Taraba States were apparently in reprisal for the killing of 19 soldiers, whose mutilated bodies were found on 12 October 2001 near to villages in Benue state including Gbeji, Vaase, Anyiin and Zaki-Biam.
While camps set up outside Makurdi, the Benue State capital, for people displaced by the fighting in Nasarawa, were still not completely empty, a new influx from the fighting in Taraba has filled them up.

It is interesting that though Professor Jerry Gana has up to the time of writing not stepped one foot in Benue state to see what 'his soldier' had done, he would want the world to take him seriously on the massacre.
If true healing must return to parts of Benue State, the terms of the Commission of Inquiry looking into the crises in the sub region must be enlarged to cover the ignoble role of the Army in the crises.
