BENWELL, U.K: CENTRE OF THE UNIVERSE Introduction
In 1997 a Local Studies Group from Benwell visited the Museum of Antiquities and were amazed to discover that in the past Benwell had been an important and cosmopolitan place and that a large collection of significant artefacts had survived as evidence of these facts.
Benwell and the adjacent districts of Elswick, Arthurs Hill and Fenham, form a western gateway into the heart of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne.
The Crown took possession of Benwell from Tynemouth Priory in 1540, when Henry VIII dissolve the monasteries, and in the early 1600s was split into smaller estates and bought by the Shafto and Riddell families, reinforcing the connection with Newcastle merchants who were interested in exploiting the coal reserves on the banks of the Tyne.

The Roman army's precise reason for building the Vallum is not known but it is thought that it was to protect the rear of the military area and to limit the places where civilians could cross the frontier to the forts and main roads.
At Benwell, one of these Vallum crossings can still be seen in Denhill Park Avenue with the foundations of its monumental gateway on the causeway.

Memoirs of a great detective, ch. 51 (1904) by John Wilson Murray
Birchall intimated to Pelly that Benwell was not much of a fellow, but that he was simply crossing with them to a farm, and that it would be just as well for Pelly to have nothing to do with him.
Benwell was a credulous young fellow and innocently entered the swamp and started up the abandoned winding trail, Birchall readily finding a pretext for dropping behind a moment and Benwell eagerly pressing on for a sight of the farm — the farm he never was to see.

PHILLIP BENWELL: When we toast the queen, we toast Australia, we toast the system of government, we toast the people; but when you toast Australia you remove some of those meanings.
