Conversion of 3-Ethoxy-4-hydroxybenzoaldehyde into a corresponding nitrile compound was carried out according to the process of Example 1a to yield 3-Ethoxy-4-hydroxy benzonitrile as a pale brown solid with a yield of 95% and a purity of higher than 97% as indicated by HPLC analysis.
Conversion of 3-Ethoxy-4-hydroxybenzoaldehyde into a corresponding nitrite compound was carried out according to the process of Example 1a to yield 3,4-diethoxybenzonitrile as a yellow solid with a yield of 92% and a purity of higher than 93% as indicated by HPLC analysis.

The adsorption of benzonitrile, CO, and NO on vanadium-magnesium catalysts(VMC) of ethylene polymerization was studied by IR diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy.
It was shown that carbon oxide and benzonitrile interact with both the Lewis acid sites of magnesium chloride and the coordinatively unsaturated V4+ ions in VMC, and the absorption bands of magnesium chloride overlap with the absorption bands of VMC.
The complexes of CO and benzonitrile with V5+ ions were not found in the VOCl3/MgCl2 system.

Batch kinetic experiments were performed for adsorption of nitrobenzene and benzonitrile from aqueous solution onto activated carbon, the isotherms of which were only partially expressed by Freundlich equations.
The experiments were carried out with adsorbents which had been equilibrated with a certain concentration of the solution in advance, to obtain adsorption rates representing certain ranges of the amount adsorbed.
Introduction of mobility of adsorbed molecule, derived through a treatment similar to ordinary diffusion in liquid phase, and assumption of the change of mobility with the energy of adsorption well explained the dependence of surface diffusivity in the whole range of concentration investigated.

The reaction of methyl benzoate [1] with NH was studied over Montmorillonite K10 clay in the temperature range 280–340°C. Benzonitrile [2], benzoic acid [3], benzamide [4], N-methylbenzamide [5], and methanol were formed as products in varying amounts.
The deactivation is mainly due to dealumination by water produced in the reaction and accumulation of organic residue containing an amide group on the surface of the clay.
It was also possible to calculate effective active sites on the catalyst surface and then a correlation with the turnover of formation of benzonitrile could be established.
