Mercia, sometimes spelled Mierce, was one of the kingdoms of the Anglo-Saxon heptarchy, in what is now England, in the region of the Midlands, with its heart in the valley of the Trent and its tributary streams.
The name Mercia is Old English for "boundary folk" (see marches), and the traditional interpretation was that the kingdom originated along the frontier between the Welsh and the Anglo-Saxon invaders, although P.
The Danes drove Burgred, the last king of Mercia from his kingdom in 874 and in 886, the eastern part of the kingdom became part of the Danelaw, while the western portion was occupied by Wessex.

Offa of Mercia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Offa (died July 26/29, 796) was the King of Mercia from 757 until his death.
Prior to the rise of Wessex in the 9th century, he was arguably the most powerful and successful of the Old English kings, effectively ruling the whole of England south of the River Humber during the latter part of his reign.
The circumstances of this are unclear, and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle simply states that "Offa, King of Mercia, ordered Aethelberht's head to be struck off." Roger of Wendover later gave an account of the event in which Aethelbert was killed through the treachery of Offa's wife Cynethryth, but his account may be entirely legendary.

Further, St. Willehad, who came to Frisia as a missionary in the time of King Alhred of Northumbria and used Echternach as a base, appears to be a kinsman of Beornrad and therefore of Willibrord and Alcuin (Wood 2001: 90-91).

Besides Penda and Eowa (who the author of the Historia Brittonum said were the sons of Pybba who were the best known to him), Pybba also apparently had a son named Coenwalh.
Every king from Penda until Ceolwulf, who was deposed in 823, was said to be a descendant of Pybba, either through Penda, Eowa, or Coenwalh (perhaps excluding the short-lived Beornrad, whose background is unknown).
