Beregond was interested to meet Pippin, for he had never met a Hobbit before, and he was amazed to find that although Pippin was like a child in appearance he had been through more dangers than most Men of Gondor.
Beregond reported his actions to the Chief of the Guard, and Gandalf recommended that Beregond should be assigned to guard Faramir in the Houses of Healing.

After the War of the Ring, Beregond is passed judgement on by King Elessar and is transferred to the guard of Faramir in Ithilien.

Summary: "Beregond had misjudged Peregrin Took, and he was chagrinned to be so fooled, Guard of the Tower and honest Man of Gondor that he was." Author notes: Wanting to thank Dana for procuring a LJ code for me, I asked her what she might like as a token of thanks.
Beregond knew Peregrin had the honor of tending Faramir as a servant of Lord Denethor, and when he began his sentry duty while battle raged at the gates of his city, Beregond was surprised to see the halfling dash towards him, hurrying on some errand.
Beregond, Guard of the Tower and honest Man of Gondor, backed away, grateful beyond words for the spray of leaves that hid him from view, for he had judged Peregrin the Halfling wrongly again, and he was afraid.

 An Honest Man of Gondor
However, Beregond was a Guard of the Tower and an honest Man of Gondor; he confessed his mistake to Peregrin straightaway and from that moment treated him with the respect of a peer.
Beregond held his doubt within, for though it seemed Faramir slowly lost a silent battle within, Beregond had faith he would not succumb, and he did not wish add to Peregrin's distress.
His buttocks were shapely, and lean, and they tensed and relaxed in a feral rhythm as Beregond watched, dumbfounded, and Peregrin sang, breathless now, and closer to the tune's usual swift tempo.

The gate to the Silent Street was officially closed to all except the steward and those bearing some token of his, but Beregond had served as a guard of the White Tower for long years, both in the Citadel courtyard outside and as a door-warden in the halls of the tower itself.

Beregond is one of my favorite characters from ROTK, and I keep hoping he'll show up in the EE.
Beregond in the book was supposed to be the "everyman" of Gondor; through him, you saw what your average Gondorian (soldier) was like.
Perhaps he was far removed from the Beregond of the book and that was why (although it doesn't explain Gamling from TTT) and then suddenly Ian's CV said Irolas.
